Future Insight: Changing the World with an Anticipatory Mindset

We are at a unique point in human history, marked by accelerating global change and enhanced by technological advances. We are always doing the impossible. Agile organizations learned how to change rapidly, but with change accelerating, we must go beyond agility and learn to anticipate disruptive problems before they happen.

We are at a unique point in human history, marked by accelerating global change and enhanced by technological advances. We are always doing the impossible. Agile organizations learned how to change rapidly, but with change accelerating, we must go beyond agility and learn to anticipate disruptive problems before they happen.

A New Incentive

With over 500 known cycles that repeat, such as biological cycles, celestial cycles and business cycles, and predictable linear changes, such as the retirement of aging Baby Boomers, there is a way to anticipate many of the problems we will have and pre-solve them before they happen. The good news is that there is a growing global supply of young, anticipatory minds paying attention to the Hard Trends with an interest in changing the world, now with a new incentive for them to anticipate ways to shape the future positively.

In celebrating its 350th anniversary in 2018, Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, pioneered the Future Insight Prize to stimulate groundbreaking science and innovative technologies for the benefit of humanity. With a targeted 1,000,000-euro grant, the inaugural Future Insight Prize winner of 2019 will be announced in July, marking the first of many prize winners over the next 35 years that both stimulate and honor achievements in science and technology key for humanity, namely health, nutrition and energy.

The Pandemic Protector

The 2019 prize will be allocated in the field of pandemic preparedness, for work in anticipating a later realization of the visionary dream product coined as the “Pandemic Protector.” This breakthrough product begins with a clinical sample of a person infected with an unknown pathogen and produces an agent for cure or to prevent infection of others within a short, clinically relevant time frame. Researchers and entrepreneurs know we must anticipate, pre-solve and change in new, innovative ways in order to stay ahead of this problem.

First announced at Curious 2018, the first Future Insight conference, the event had more than 60 speakers, including six Nobel laureates, and was attended by more than 1,300 leaders from academic and corporate environments from all over the world. This announcement drew in more than 70 top scientists to the Future Insight Prize jury, collaborating to select the first year’s prize winner.

With antimicrobial resistance threatening the effective prevention and treatment of an always-transforming range of infections, this research is imperative for 2020 because the CDC estimates that in the United States alone, over two million people are sickened every year with antibiotic-resistant infections, with at least 23,000 deaths as a result. Worldwide, there is evidence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria that cause common and treatable infections, such as pneumonia.

The 2020 dream product is likely to build upon the 2019 “Pandemic Protector,” as innovators are already working to develop a series of novel, narrow-spectrum antibacterial agents capable of curing any bacterial infection without induction of drug resistance.

In yet another cumulative way, 2021’s prize is on the topic of dramatic population increase and how to sustain such an increase with innovative ways to produce food while avoiding compromising the integrity of our planet. Given the fact that the population is likely to hit 9.1 billion by 2050, overall food production must increase by 70% between 2005 and 2050.

The prize topics extend as far as 2022, which pertains to renewable sources of energy as to slow and ultimately cease the constant consumption of our natural resources for fuel. In conjunction with this concept, researchers hope to avidly avoid altering our atmosphere’s CO2, which will require us to utilize the sun in new and innovative ways.

Future Insight Prize

It is an honor for Burrus Research to partner with Merck to expand and advance the Future Insight Prize as a mainstream example of anticipatory innovation applied to the greater good of the human race. Professors and scholars of Harvard University, Princeton and many more Ivy League institutions are joining in to get as many innovative minds as possible focusing on pre-solving the world’s greatest challenges in the future sustainability of our planet by way of continuing research laying important foundations for the four published dream products as discussed here.

Change comes from the outside in, forcing us to react and manage crises. Transformation, on the other hand, whether it is business or personal, always comes from the inside out, and that gives us far more positive control while allowing us to actively shape the future. The Future Insight Prize is a perfect example of a company utilizing their available resources to anticipate and pre-solve global problems before they happen as they positively shape the future, not only for themselves, but for the future of humankind. I believe it is imperative that attention be brought to this incredible opportunity for entrepreneurs and innovators alike.

The Curious 2020 Future Insight Conference, will take place July 13 -15, 2020 in Darmstadt, Germany, The Conference will run with plenary sessions followed by three parallel work streams with attendance from all over the world.

A Coaching Guide On Disrupting The Health Industry: 3 Steps

Ignacio Perez de Bartolome walks us through how coaches can disrupt the health industry

We live in a world of innovation, change and disruption:

  • The largest hospitality chain in the world owns no hotels (Airbnb)
  • The largest media conglomerate publishes no media (Facebook)
  • The largest taxi company in the world owns no taxis (Uber)
  • The largest retailer in the world owns no stock (Alibaba)

The illusion of security is being dilapidated one sector at a time. Century-old companies are struggling to keep up with those created by teenagers in their parents’ basements.

Opportunities are ripe and that is why no sector is out of danger. One day, someday, disruption will set in and bring chaos to what was once a sea of tranquillity.

Health seems heavily protected as a sector because of the tight regulatory environment within. However, it is worth reviewing what happened to industries like hospitality and transportation: both were populated by undying corporate mammoths until the fine day it all came crashing down.

In January, Jeff Bezos shook $30bn off the health industry in one day (Source). He did not do anything particular other than announce plans to provide affordable healthcare to his employees. That is all it took

No lobbying could have protected healthcare companies then.

As a one person coach, you might be intimidated in taking on the healthcare establishment by yourself. It can remind you of David and Goliath, and you would not be that off.

Regardless, making a name for yourself and carving out a piece of the pie as a health coach is easier than ever before. Let me explain why:

In order for disruption to set in an industry there must be a confluence of three factors:

  1. Relaxed regulatory environment
  2. Heightened Price sensitivity
  3. The emergence of new business models.

In essence, for an industry to be widely disrupted there must be loose legal entry barriers, an increasingly displeased portion of the population with the available services, and the technological advancements necessary to make disruptive business operations viable.

So here are 3 insights to make a name out of yourself in the Health industry:

Differentiate Yourself

Being different doesn’t mean being differentiated. The former means you have chosen to be a contrarian without necessarily considering whether your new ways actually add to your clients’ journey. Differentiation comes by knowing what is currently available in the market and exploring innovative ways to serve those neglected by everyone profitably. It is then testing and validating those assumptions through minimum viable products.

For a coach, this is all about getting to know inside and out the reasons why people are fed up of their current healthcare provider, and what makes them want to explore alternatives. It means sitting down with yourself and asking what benefits does your coaching bring to the table, and why should people care about them. All of this helps you plan your go-to-market strategy, create relevant marketing material and optimise your approach with clients.

Google’s mission is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” (Source). It is a bold statement that requires constant innovation to be ever achieved. This is because there is always new information to be organised and made use of, in faster and more accessible ways. Innovation brings change but you need to know when to stop and move onto another version of your products or programs. This is very well illustrated in the value/innovation graph below. Notice how without a further iteration in the product, innovation plateaus and the value addition is minimal

As a coach, the only way to be in business for the rest of your career and enjoy predictable clientele is to innovate your coaching delivery. More than anything, when it comes to health and healthcare, technology is a looming threat. The industry as a whole is moving towards less invasive treatments through advanced technology in an attempt to care more for the customer. How can you as a health coach deliver your coaching in ways which force people to pay attention to? What will machines never be able to provide to patients? Innovating along these lines is a tried and tested approach to long-term competitive advantage and worry-free business development.

Caring Sells

Amazon’s mission statement is longer than Google’s by a factor of a couple of pages. The gist of it is that they are on a mission to become the world’s most customer centric business (Source). Why? Because caring sells.

As a health coach you need to be aware of what is shifting in the health industry as a whole. What we are seeing unfold now are shifts in consumer attitude. People are more displeased and want more transparency. They want health bills to be accessible and easily understandable so that refunds can be simplified. Health is moving towards the same level of customer satisfaction than Amazon. When the experience you get ordering a book online is better than the care you receive when you are in need, the system has to change. You must be the one to see it before anyone else.

The health insurance premiums have increases year on year for the past 20 years in line also with the annual deductible costs (Source), making healthcare more and more a privilege for the few. People are going to expect more care, for less, whilst improving the entire customer experience from start to end. At what point do you come into the picture? That is the question you must ask yourself.

Healthcare is ripe for disruption, with the correct industry analysis and customer behavioural insights, health coaches have a reliable ace up their sleeves.

Pop Quiz Monday with Drs. Gameli Dekayie and Chantale Stephens-Archer, Founders at Quench Wellness

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

  1. Can you please tell everyone your name?

Drs. Gameli Dekayie and Chantale Stephens-Archer, better known as Dr. G and Dr. C. We are best friends and physicians. Dr. Dekayie is a practicing ER physician, and Dr. Stephens-Archer is a practicing hospitalist, and together we are the owners of Quench Wellness clinic located in Chicago’s South Loop.

2. Tell us about your business and what you do?

The name Quench Wellness literally came from the concept of “ quenching our client’s thirst.” We recognize that with our busy lifestyles it is challenging to get our full 64 fl ounces plus of water a day, 5–9 full servings of fruits or vegetables, sleep 8 hours a day, working out 5x/ week, live entirely stress free and hormonally balance all while taking the dog out, making dinner and working a full-time job. It just seems impossible!

Quench Wellness encourages our clients to live the best version of themselves by restoring depleted vitamins and nutrients lost in their day to day hectic lives. We offer to replenish intravenous vitamin infusions that bypass the harsh environment of the gut and enters directly into the bloodstream, thereby increasing absorption and providing optimal benefit. So whether it is glutathione in the beauty blend, taurine in the performance blend or B12 in the lipotropic B shot; in the process of replenishing the body of depleted vitamins and nutrients we can detoxify the body, restore beautiful skin, enhance performance optimization, reduce recovery time, aid in weight loss and boost fertility.

We also offer a headache blend, immunity blend, boss blend, jetsetter blend, and hangover blend. The concept also applies to our hormone pellet therapy that rebalances hormone levels responsible for energy, mood, and vitality. Our most intimate service is our non-surgical vaginal revitalization that restores vaginal lubrication and elasticity. We offer a medically sound wellness experience grounded in preventative health principles steeped in peace and comfort. Everyone can benefit from living a healthier life.

3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?

With over 22 years of combined experience in the health industry, we have seen firsthand the toll that chronic illnesses can take on our bodies, our communities and the healthcare system at large. In 2004, nearly 5.5 billion dollars in hospital charges resulted from dehydration admissions. The vast majority of hospitalizations due to dehydration are avoidable. The potential national savings from avoidable hospitalizations due to dehydration could have been as much as $1.14 billion dollars. Moreover, this is only with dehydration, consider the other chronic medical conditions.

Many times, in our encounters with severely chronically ill patients, we are adjusting or prescribing meds to no avail, and we wondered if we had encountered this patient ten years earlier, what course would their health have taken? We wanted to offer something different; a preventative, proactive approach to medicine rather than reactive. We believe that this is the direction that medicine is going. This business is a passion project, and the more we do it, the more empowered and energized we feel. We never thought of ourselves as just doctors. We have always done more than we expected of ourselves.

4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?

It’s even harder than medical school because there’s no roadmap for being a successful business person. An integral component of our success is finding a killer squad or a dream team. We are medically trained, so the medicine and the science of it all comes easy to us. Know what you know and know what you don’t know. The real challenge is finding people to compensate for your deficits. For us, that meant a healthcare lawyer, a business coach, a marketing strategist and a clinical manager sound in implementing policies. A successful business allows everyone to operate in their strengths. The outcomes are so much better and rewarding for everyone.

5. What do you love most about your job?

We love educating people on more natural options to approach their health. People’s eyes light up when we tell them our mission and the services we offer. It’s not complicated; vitamins make us feel better. When your hormones are balanced, you feel better. And, addressing intimate health, especially for women, makes them FEEL BETTER!

6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

We try to live our mission: living the best versions of ourselves. So, we try to enjoy our time together while celebrating what we do well and learning from what we don’t. We celebrate accomplishments, birthdays; we even celebrate when someone is moving on to another position because we know it is part of their journey. We encourage wellness in the space all around us.

7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?

Be careful to pursue an entrepreneurial passion that can be fueled by your skills, vocation, and capabilities that can change the piece of the world you inhabit. Ask yourself these four questions: Do I love it? Am I great at it? Can I get paid for it? Does the world need it?

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
