Why Would ANYONE Want to Work for YOU?

Why would ANYONE want to work for you? And why would they want to do it remotely? Too often companies think attracting, hiring and retaining quality associates who can work on their own is like finding Bigfoot. They have heard tales of their existence but so far they have not actually discovered the real creature. The answer to this seemingly impossible dilemma is actually not that complicated. But it does involve you as the hiring manager to do a little homework and answer a few questions.

The first question is WHO are you looking for? Are you looking for employees with a vast array of experience in a particular field? Are you looking for recent college graduates who show an aptitude for your work but who can be trained in your particular methods? Are you looking for a specific age, gender or social background?  Working remotely is not for everyone. It requires skills that the typical office worker in the same field might not have or need. An office based programmer with 20 years of experience might be able to redesign your entire company employee payroll screen in a few hours. However, give that same programmer  a laptop and put them at their dining room table with no managers or co-workers and they might just as easily become a kindergartner on the first day of school.

Another question that many hiring managers fail to ask is WHY does someone want to work for the company?  And WHY do they want to do it remotely?  In your quest for the perfect remote employee you need to identify who that person is and what is important to them. Do they like the freedom to work odd hours? Do they enjoy being and working alone without managers breathing down their backs? Do they love the type of work your company would have them do?  Do they simply like the money ?

Not everyone is motivated by the same thing. It’s kind of like raising children. Your 7 year old son is not interested in or motivated by the same things as your 14 year old daughter. They value different things and you will probably speak to them and deal with them in slightly different ways. Here is where you as the hiring manager need to now transform into the marketing manager as well. There is a saying in advertising that people don’t buy features. They buy benefits.  They don’t buy anti-lock brakes. They buy keeping the car right side up and out of the snowdrift on the frigid winter night when the deer jumps into the road from the shadows and dad slams on the binders with the kids sleeping in the backseat.

People don’t choose to work remotely. They choose to work at a job that let’s them wake up at 9 am to be “at the office” at 9:05. Or maybe they are buying into a position that pays enough money to allow them the freedom to tour with their band and pursue their life’s real passion. Or maybe they love this particular line of work but office politics is just not their thing. The position you are offering has a multitude of features that offer a multitude of benefits to a multitude of different people. Here is your opportunity to show the world just how working for your company can make the right candidate’s life amazing.

So now you’ve found the perfect fit. They’ve been an incredible hire. Life is prefect. Now comes the tricky part. How do you maintain this fabulous  relationship? Of course there are the obvious choices like more money or more vacation time. Those certainly don’t hurt and with some folks maybe that’s all it takes. But what about those who may not be motivated by society’s conventional wisdom? 

Let me ask you a question. Do you drive a rented car the same way you drive your own car? Probably not. Now I’m not saying you’re doing burnouts as you leave the lot. But I’ll bet you don’t handle that vehicle with the same love and respect you give to your own ride. The one you paid good money for. The one you OWN. The rental isn’t yours. At the end of the trip you’ll give it back and it becomes someone else’s responsibility.

You have no skin in that game. YOUR vehicle? That’s different. You’re responsible for that one. Yes, it’s very different when you own it. So why should it be any different with a job? When you find that perfect employee find a way to let them own that job.

I’m not saying you need to rush out and put their name on the building or redo your company letterhead. But find a way to tie their success to the success of the company or even the department they work in. It doesn’t need to be huge.  You just need to get them out of the rental and into their own ride.

What do you love most about your job?
I love that I get to connect with so many incredible women and their stories on a day to day basis. I get to work with them to help provide solutions to problems they may have and ensure they live comfortably.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Having my own business is incredible. It presents new challenges every day and keeps me engaged, excited and ready to take on anything that may come up!

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Working with a variety of people from employees to agencies allows for better solutions to be formed and ensuring all decisions are in the best interests of the business. My co-workers all have the same vision, and we work incredibly well together to ensure the success of the brand.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Fun at work? Of course! Every day is exciting, and the conversations I have with other staff create an entertaining environment for all. While we don’t do any particular exercises, we often catch up with one another out of the office.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Being a business owner can be very stressful at times! You have staff that is relying on you to ensure that it continues to grow. I make many of the large decisions myself and this can at times bean added stress, especially if I make the wrong one.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
While we primarily sell our garments in ‘plus sizes’ we decided to try a small run of a smaller size to test the market. We found very quickly that the market was not within our database. This meant that we have to develop a new approach to selling smaller sizes. In future, we will ensure we look closely at the data to ensure what will be successful.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
For anyone looking to start in the beauty/fashion industry I would recommend that you make sure you have a strong USP. People want to see something new, something that solves a problem and something they can be engaged with.

I need more hours in the day. Wearing too many hats and juggling parenting and business owner responsibilities can be tricky.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Trust your gut instincts and make sure you do your due diligence before making big decisions. Build a tribe of strong business connections – they are ones you want to lean on when you need support in your business.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Do your research. Start small so you can test and measure than scale. Engage an expert mentor in your industry even if you think you can’t afford too it will save you money, time and make you more money if you go it alone.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The adtech industry is very fast paced and dynamic–change is the only real constant. As an angel investor, I’ve seen the ways that changing market conditions can impact a company firsthand–and it can be challenging. It’s very competitive and dynamic.

The greatest challenges are ultimately your greatest opportunities. We’ve continued to capitalize on the opportunities before us and invest in technology and people, and we’ve made multiple strategic acquisitions. Advertisers are looking to work with fewer partners to create a more efficient and seamless experience, and Amobee’s comprehensive technology stack empowers advertisers with an end-to-end campaign and portfolio management across TV, digital and social.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
I’ve done numerous acquisitions throughout my career, and I’ve learned many lessons on successful integrations. The main component I focus on is finding companies with complementary capabilities, whether that is in technology, markets served, or domain expertise. This ensures you are able to realize the greatest commercial value and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The other critical component is focusing on the people and ensuring both companies have complementary cultures. “Culture clash” is cited by executives the number one reason for an M&A deal failing to achieve promised value, and in my experience, I have seen this is the case as well. We make unifying culture and values and people a top priority and component of every acquisition and integration.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Over the course of my career as an entrepreneur, tech CEO, and angel investor in over 70 startups with 15 successful exits, I’ve found the skill needed to be successful in execution. It’s what I attribute my own success too, and I believe execution is a skill that can be learned. Success isn’t dependent on having a great idea, and ideas are a dime a dozen. It isn’t about intelligence or education either or even about hard work. You can be really busy and hard-working, but it doesn’t mean you are working on the right things. We all know smart, educated people and hard-working people who are not very successful.

The difference between success and failure is execution. Execution is the ability to do and get results, to keep moving forward to achieve your vision and goals despite the obstacles that lay ahead. Execution is the difference between success and failure. I believe so strongly in the power of execution. I wrote a book, The Execution Factor, The One Skill That Drives Success that teaches the skill of execution broken down into five traits: Vision, Passion, Action, Resilience, and Relationships. In order to be successful and master execution, they must have these five traits. The traits are interdependent, not independent, and in the balance as you need them all to be successful.

You need to be resilient. You need to be prepared for the unexpected and be able to go with the flow. You can’t afford to let things get under your skin too easily. Always be moving forward and just get on with it.

I guess the best way to explain our company is to think of us as the ‘Shark Tank’ of the e-commerce world. Through Supernova and the power of the internet, we have created a formula, which allows us to fast-forward the brand building process. We’re now approaching our third year of business, with four global brands under our belt: Coco & Eve, Sky & Sand, Body Boss, and Skinny Mint, with more in the pipeline for 2019.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the challenge to build products and brands that have never been seen before. To bring something new and exciting to consumers in this extremely competitive market space.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I am so passionate about our existing brands, and the products and brands in the works, so motivation is something that comes naturally. Don’t get me wrong there are the odd days where I’d love to stay at home on the couch, but even then I find myself reaching for my laptop!

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Culture is something that is really important to us. Since day dot we’ve wanted to create a company where our staff would love coming to work. We are invested in our team, and try to go out of our way to make sure they’re relaxed, laughing and enjoying life! We promote living a healthy lifestyle, so a gym membership is included in our employment contracts. Getting a change of scenery is vital, so, going out for lunch, walks, or afternoon drinks are always plotted into our calendar! At Supernova, we all have the travel bug. We encourage our staff to take up international job transfers within the company, so they can get their travel fix while working with Supernova.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The main and most important challenge we have to tackle is compliance. We are currently shipping to over 70 countries across the globe, and it’s crucial that our products adhere to each and every compliance law. The rules and regulations are constantly changing, so this is something that we are cross-checking on a daily basis.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Don’t underestimate the power of social media. We’re all aware that it allows us to market directly to a global audience and reach new customers, but think of it as your most essential market research tool. Thought of a new product concept? Why not put it out to your social media ‘panel’ and see what they think! Social media is such an affordable and excessive way to interact with consumers, so think big when it comes to your social media strategy.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Go work at a company that is doing great things in your industry. Find a job, boss or mentor you can learn from. After learning and achieving something in the industry then you can start to plan where you can personally make an impact, how to build something new and innovative.

How to get out of meetings that suck

Internal communications for an organization is vital for collaboration. A company in which their employees are working at the same beat are more likely to have better delivery times for their projects. Meetings are a good thing for an organization especially when department heads need to coordinate the work activities of their staff with others in the organization.

With all of the coordination benefits of meetings, there is a downside when you start to associate work productivity by having more meetings. Just like anything else, too much of one thing can erode the benefits. For example, we can make a similar case for something as simple as coffee. If you have one cup of coffee in the morning, then it will rev your body up. If you have 8 cups of coffee, then you would be jittery and shakey. The idea is that you do not want to overdo too much of one thing that it starts to harm you.

There are some tactics that you can use to free up your calendar and get out of those unnecessary meetings which are bringing your productivity down.

  1. Identify which meetings do not add value
    The first step in getting rid of unnecessary meetings is to identify which meetings do not add value to your work. You need to set up a system for yourself to evaluate each meeting. You need to determine if the meeting is a waste of time, or value-added. If the meeting is value-added, then you show up at the meeting. If the meeting is a waste of time, then you notify the meeting organizer that you would not be able to add any value to the meeting, and there is no point for you to be there. Every organization has its internal politics, and please make sure to use your best judgment in communicating to the right authorities without burning any working relationships.
  2. Set up a meeting policy
    Set up a meeting policy for yourself and communicate your plan to your team members. Let them know that you are willing to go to meetings that you can provide knowledge and advice relating to your domain of work. You want people to see that you are a good worker and you want to maximize your time for efficiency. Most managers and co-workers can respect a person who wants to be productive for their organization.
  3. Use your calendar to schedule work time
    Your calendar is a powerful tool that you need to leverage to let people know your daily schedule. Most calendars such as Outlook are internally sharable within the organization. You can book time on your calendar which is dedicated to working and allow some time throughout the day for meetings. This is an excellent way to manage your time efficiently.
  4. Encourage a culture of productivity
    You want to be part of a group who supports productivity. You want to encourage awareness within the department and externally about the value of time. Time is money, and you want to make the most of company resources.

These four strategies should provide a useful framework for you to use to help you identify and get out of meetings that do not add value to your day. Remember that your time is valuable. Please, make the most out of it.

How entrepreneurs can stay motivated

Life is filled with a lot of ups and downs. If you can avoid the roller-coaster of emotion with entrepreneurship, then you are not pushing your self to your fullest potential. You must challenge yourself to reach your business goals. There are many roadblocks that you will endure on your way to success. Sometimes these roadblocks can ruin your motivation, mood, and even make you depressed. We are going to discuss some of the steps that you can take to help you stay motivated when you are running your business.

  1. Remember why you started in the first place
    Why did you want to start a business? Did you want to start a business to become financially independent? Did you want to open up opportunities for your self which were not previously available to you? Whatever your reason was for starting your company, you need to remember what inspired you on your entrepreneurial journey.
  2. Set up mini goals
    If you have a business goal that looks daunting, then that goal may be too big to tackle at once. You may want to segment that goal into small obtainable chunks. This way you can have steady progress in building your business and create a momentum of success to continue to inspire you to achieve your goals.
  3. Have a support system
    You want to build a network of family, friends, and peers who will support you on your entrepreneurial journey. You need to have people who will pick you up when you are down. You will find that these people will be the most important people in your life. Do you have someone who you can count on to help you through your struggles as an entrepreneur? If you do then keep them close and continue to build a strong relationship with them.
  4. Take a break
    An excellent cure to help you stay motivated may be to walk away from your work. Sometimes you may find yourself too involved in the details of your work that you may forget about the picture. You may see that taking some time off from your business may help you gain a big-picture perspective to stay motivated in accomplishing your goals.
  5. Think about how success would impact your life
    Close your eyes. Think about how your life will change if your business is thriving. What would you be able to do differently that you could not do now? What are the opportunities that a successful business would create for you and your family? These life-changing goals will help motivate you to continue with your dreams of success.
  6. Make your work fun
    Tedious work that is monotonous in a stressful environment can impact your health. You need to find a way to make your job more fun and create an environment that fosters creativity. Corporate culture is vital to the growth of an organization. People are the foundation of your business. Having a corporate culture which celebrates work achievements and has fun while being successful will lead to a productive enterprise.
  7. Have a mentor
    Find a good mentor to help you stay motivated. You want to find a mentor who has experience in your industry and has already accomplished the work that you would like to achieve with your business. A mentor can be a critical part of getting the knowledge that you need from an experienced business person.

What do you love most about your job?
Impact. Ultimately, we started the agency because we wanted to help companies grow and scale. What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Again, impact. Our work directly affects the lives of other people. There’s also an enormous snowball effect, so being results-focused and consistent is absolutely critical. And because we take the time to get to know all of our clients on a personal level, we tend to go above and beyond to make their lives easier – as you would for anyone you care about. The human aspect of what we do can’t be ignored, and that’s what motivates us every day.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Where to begin… We have an incredibly multi-cultural agency, with people from lots of different backgrounds and all walks of life. But what binds them all together – and what inspires me most – is their passion and dedication to their craft, their hunger to learn and up-skill themselves, and their desire to do the best they possibly can for our clients. They’re genuinely excited to see the impact their learnings have on performance, and even more excited to see the impact that the performance improvements have on clients. It’s a cycle of motivation that inspires me immensely and an attitude that, regardless of title or tenure, every professional should aspire to.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Our team didn’t know each other when they started at Yoghurt, but they’re now friends both inside and outside the office. As a result, there’s no shortage of team bonding time. We have lunches in the park, after work drinks at the pub, we play video games on a Friday afternoon, have movie nights at the office, and have quarterly team building events. We also have lunch n’ learns, where someone on the team will teach the rest of the team a new skill or strategy.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
When you’ve worked at agencies for as long as I have, you understand that sometimes even when you do your absolute best for a client, it might not work out. There are often factors outside of your control that dictate the performance figures, which can lead to a client moving on.

Those conversations are always challenging and rarely pleasant. You might be dealing with someone who’s frustrated and disappointed, so it’s important to have compassion while still standing up for the team and the strategy (but only if appropriate). These are tough situations that, thankfully, aren’t a regular occurrence, but are nevertheless one of the more challenging aspects of the role.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
It’s absolutely critical to communicate regularly, communicate effectively and document everything. When clients are engaging us for multiple services, there are often lots of different campaigns running across multiple channels. Things can get messy and confusing if there isn’t a streamlined method of communication and proper documentation.

We sound our client’s summaries of every major meeting and phone call we have with them, so there’s an official paper trail that can be referenced if need be. We also use shared project management software that gives both parties the visibility and transparency they need in order to stay on top of the various projects that might be running concurrently.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Be a sponge. The digital marketing industry is incredibly dynamic, with new technology, channels, strategies and tactics becoming available every single day. If you’re not willing to stay on top of what’s happening in the industry and how this affects the work you do, you’re already falling behind.

Find people you can learn from and bounce ideas around with. Explore what others in the industry are doing. Go to meet-ups. Read articles. And finally, when you’re ready, start to develop your own voice and put it out there, because what you have to say might make all the difference to someone out there.

Mindfully Intuitive Nutrition creates Nutrition Workshops and Corporate Wellness Programs for organizations with a focus on Mindful and Intuitive Eating. Mindful and Intuitive Eating is about helping individuals bring the focus back to their hunger and fullness cues and honoring their bodies with the foods they want and need most. My goal is to make the workplace (and lunch break) nourishment a priority again.

What do you love most about your job?
What I love about my job is witnessing the realization employees and companies have in that nutrition is far more than just calories and fruits and vegetables. I share different tools to help employees choose what works best for them when it comes to nutrition. Whether it is using the hunger scale, food journaling, plate size method, or something else, there are different tools created for different people. Tools help to optimize nutritional intake and also helps to make nourishment a priority again. Far too often, employees are eating at their desks or workspaces, stressfully or mindlessly grazing on snacks or spending hours without eating because they are too focused on getting job tasks done. This, in turn, means there is great potential for inadequate nutritional intake or overeating. By making meal time or snack time a priority again, we are able to honor our bodies with the energy that it needs, refocus on work tasks, and improve productivity.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I love the “Aha” reactions I get every time I speak about nutrition. I do not ever speak to an organization and say “You can’t eat this” or “You have to eat that” for health. Instead, I say, “Think about what works for you, what you enjoy, and how YOU can optimize your health. Nutrition is about taking it one step at a time, one day at a time, one meal at a time.”

How do your co-workers inspire you?
I do not have any co-workers, as I am a solopreneur. However, my clients inspire me. Their stories or them sharing with me where they struggle most when it comes to nutrition pushes me to think further on how I can help to improve and optimize their health.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Creating a motivating and entertaining environment with every employee group that I have allows me to have fun at work. I allow for open dialogue, storytelling, and finding new ways to share nutrition to keep employees engaged and motivated to make small steps to optimize their health.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Creating Employees Wellness Programs that are not solely focused on ‘Weight Loss’ and having organizations believe in my message is the greatest challenge my job has. My goal is to showcase that our health has different components and it is not only based on weight. However, because most current Employee Wellness Programs are focused primarily on weight, many companies are skeptical about my approach. However, 91% of the employees that have taken my programs ask for me to come back because I’ve helped them by bringing in positivity and demonstrating that health is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Initially, all of my Corporate Wellness Programs were 12 weeks long. I felt that 12 weeks was the minimum I needed to make an impact on employee health truly. However, I realized that not all companies or employees could dedicate for 12 weeks. I now offer Lunch & Learn Workshops and 6-week programs so that it is more attainable for some companies and employees.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
My biggest advice is for them to know that no time is ever wasted. Sometimes we feel that our failures have meant that we wasted our time, but there is always a lesson to be learned. I used to focus on one-on-one counseling and realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do because I like to impact several people at a time and it makes for a much more scalable business. However, I would have never known that had I not done it first.

Studies show if you spend money on experiences you are going to be happier than if you spend money on things, so we help people achieve their “Live it List” items (bucket list). We use stocks, bonds, CDs, funds, money managers, etc. to help our clients in their wealth management.

What do you love most about your job?
Helping people. Inspiring people. Someone could hear me present and come see me after and be crying in my office (from the death of a spouse, divorce, job loss, etc.) and help them turn it all around and get a plan.

The goal of leaving a legacy. To change statistics. To help someone achieve their goals and dreams.

We have weekly hangout sessions where all of us get on and have a fun time sharing interesting stories and whatever we’ve learnt that particular week.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
With a limited barrier to entry, it is hard to stand out and be different from anyone else in the market.

Being a remote agency has enabled us to grow faster whilst staying lean, but it has a few challenges of its own and finding good talent is one of them.

Another challenge is to keep investing in training as strategies get old, we need to stay on top of where the market is heading and how we can deliver success.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Learning when to quit is equally important as it is to stay persistent. Over the years we’ve worked on personal projects, and while some has been very successful, there have been times when the business just doesn’t take off.

Recently we called quits on a project we worked on for a year in a new space but decided it was time to wind it up in favor of another project that has given us positive returns from day one.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Every day you’ll learn something new, and that is the attitude you should keep. Experiment, fail, and then experiment some more and eventually you’ll develop skills that will be of value.

As I mentioned before actively being part of the innovation process in the Naturally Sugar-Free movement and therefore having a positive impact on our nation’s health is the reason me and my team turn up every day. Naturally, Sugar-Free drinks aren’t a fad – they are here to stay. As consumers are growing not only more health conscious but also more aware of corporate agendas in the FMCG marketplace, here at Nexba we feel responsible for delivering the best quality better-for-you options combined with flavour innovations to really give people products that deliver on the health side but also the taste side. How do your co-workers inspire you?
All that Nexba has achieved to date have really been a team effort. What are some of the challenges of your job?
Without a doubt, our biggest challenge is brand awareness and increasing household penetration. Being nimble and listening to our customers has been key to our success.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
One of the biggest lessons I have learnt in a health beverage company is to take all the time you need to develop the right product. Innovation is difficult. My startup company became so successful so rapidly I was invited to join a Global, $ billion consulting firm as a partner. The firm has over 6,000 employees, over 200 offices in 41 countries and is growing every day. I also am an author for Marriah Publishing and am working on my third book.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the interaction with others in my field. I have great colleagues and love both company for which I work and the people associated with it. I am afforded the opportunity to work on diverse projects and with an incredibly diverse and interesting customer base.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I always tell young people that if it’s fun, they charge admission, but in my case, I really get excited about my work. Whether I am conducting groundbreaking research that has me talking to people from all over the world, or making sure that movie productions are as safe as possible, every day is different, and every day I learn something new. I have had jobs that were just drudgery and having one that consistently excites you is really a joy.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My coworkers are some of the best minds working in their field. I remember talking to a colleague that I had just met. She does archeological impact studies (making sure that oil exploration doesn’t inadvertently destroy precious scientific relics) I asked how she got into it, and she said, “well I’m an astrophysicist by education, but as I did that kind of work I didn’t find it intellectually fulfilling. I have always like dinosaurs, so I decided to go back to school and get another doctorate in archeology, and now here I am, and I love it.” If you are secure, it feels good to be the dumbest person in the room and at my job that is usually the case. What’s more, nobody is condescending or lords it over you. It’s a very learning-centric environment.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
If it’s fun, they charge admission and show me someone who isn’t occasionally frustrated by his or her job, and I will show you someone who either doesn’t take it seriously or just flat out doesn’t do his or her job. What I most like is that we don’t have cornball “team building exercises” we get together to barbecue, go to dinners, have holiday parties, and the like. There isn’t much prank-playing as that’s really not appropriate work behavior. We have fun because most of us genuinely like each other and enjoy the work. We have a good culture of collaboration and good leaders.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Working at home 3.5 hours from my office can often makes me feel isolated and paranoid. It can make me feel unvalued even though nothing can be further from the truth. =

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
I was once asked by the COO of the company I was working at asked me to help him with a problem. He was a voracious reader and often bought business books for his staff which they never read (except me. You don’t survive long unless you know what your executives are reading. Anyway, I thought of a book club where we could go off-site and relax and talk about the latest book he had read. The COO loved the idea, I loved the idea, and it was a monumental flop. I learned then and there that if you love an idea more than the customer (internal or external) you will always fail and you will always be disappointed.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Hard work alone will not get you success. You have to have a great attitude AND work hard. Also, don’t push for success, let success come to you.

What do you love most about your job?
As I am in the communications industry, what I love most about my job is seeing media hits from digital/print publications and/or influencers come through for my clients and my personal brands. There is no greater feeling than watching a new feature come through in my inbox!

Effective PR and social media campaigns can take time while you nurture and establish positive relationships with the journalists, editors, and audiences you are connecting with. Not only is it a win when you get a secured feature for a client, but it is a great feeling when you establish a relationship with the editor and audience to build that rapport for future outreach opportunities.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
The initial thought that comes to mind is my morning cup of coffee to get my creative juices flowing. Coffee is kind of my thing 😉

As for the key aspects of my business that motivates me to get up every day and work is the opportunity to take on new initiatives as I see fit. I absolutely love the flexibility to work with the brands I want to work with, a passion for the work and product/service is a key driver to the success of the campaigns we offer.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
I have a number of colleagues and coaches that I work with on a daily basis. The one thing that inspires me most about them is we all possess a very similar mindset in which collaboration over competition is most valuable. At the end of the day, we all know that each one of us is there to help raise the other up when they are having a down days, as well as celebrate the wins on the up days.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
When working in a creative space, creativity and motivation flows when you have a healthy mindset. Believe it or not, I find it fun to time-block time out of the day to focus on mindset and every work. Here are the ways I treat myself to “fun” at work:

  1. Brain Dumping & Journaling: There are hundreds of thoughts that run through my mind on a daily basis. I have recently become aware of brain dumping in which I need to allow myself a window to where I just right out all of my thoughts, ideas, etc., in a journal. This allows for more creative expression to avoid draining emotions and/or weighted lethargic feelings when it comes to taking on new initiatives or projects.
  2. Following a more strategic mindfulness and meditation routine; preferably in the mornings to jumpstart the day. Allowing myself to sit in silence to clear the mind while centering my energy flow, brings more holistic energy without needing to reach instantly for the coffee. It is a great way to release energy blocks I may have built the day before to start a new day fully refreshed and revitalized.
  3. Scheduling a massage at least once a month to release built up tension in the muscles and to relieve the pressures of working at a desk hours on end. Plus, how could you go wrong with lying on a comfortable bed with soothing music and aromatherapy tinkling your senses for 60-90 minutes?!
  4. Making more time for yoga. Similar to meditation and/or getting a massage, this is a great way for me to tune into the energy flows I experience each day and to release control of the ones that do not serve me. I’ve noticed that when I do yoga frequently, I am able to understand my thoughts better in which aids in better communications with clients, colleagues, and what I need to transcribe from a content basis within the work I create.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Some of the key challenges I face with my business is managing all the hats I have to wear. Not only am I the publicist, marketing manager, and client relations director, but I am also the sales associate, the payroll specialist, and accountant, the brand manager… You get the idea.

One of the biggest focuses I have right now is getting the point where I can begin to delegate the aspects of the business that are outside of my zone of excellence and begin establishing my core “team.”

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
One of the biggest lessons I learned from a past project is the challenges that can come when you try to offer so much for so little. As a new business owner, it is easy to get caught up in the “scarcity” mindset of taking of projects just to have a small increase in pay. What I have learned to focus on is knowing the worth of the services we offer and building the packages in a way that is bulletproof in what scope of work will be offered at a fair market price.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Stay consistent, persistent and do not take on work or projects just for work or revenue. Take the time to vet and nurture the process to attract and obtain the right clients and projects for you and your business.

Secondly, make sure to have your services and offering streamlined before you begin pitching yourself to new potential clients. I highly advice working with a business advisory group or association to build a roadmap as to what types of packages you need to offer, where you are going to find your ideal clients/customers, and how to target them effectively and efficiently.

Working with an advisor has help shifted my mindset as to what appropriate actions I need to take in order to scale and grow my business. I worked with an advisor about 2 and a half years into my business, but I would advise to focus on this as one of the very first steps before you get started. What is your job role?
I am the co-founder, president, and CFO of Fisker Inc. Most of my day is spent working on the growth and evolution of the company – from securing investors, building our various teams across the organization (including an entire team of scientists and staff devoted to moving our patented Fisker solid-state battery technology toward full commercial availability across the globe) to planning for the future capitalization of Fisker Inc. I spend a substantial amount of time on operations overall, ensuring the company is structured and runs as smoothly as a mature company, even though we are still at the start-up phase.

The finance side on its own takes up quite a large amount of energy – from complex debt structures, private placements and even work on various initiatives that revolve around the possibility of the company going public at some point down the line.

Tell us about your company?
Henrik and I co-founded Fisker Inc. in 2016, as an advanced e-mobility and automotive technology company with the mission to develop world-class, emotionally-compelling vehicles featuring the most forward-thinking automotive technologies in existence. We started the company with the aim to bring new, affordable electric vehicles to market and showcase our groundbreaking EV technologies in our more high-end, flagship vehicles. It’s hard to narrow this down to just one aspect of my role. Pushing our team to higher levels every day, inspiring them to achieve what they never thought was possible, is constant motivation for myself as well. I have always enjoyed a challenge, as it sort of raises your threshold in life for risk and reward. Two traits I value and attribute to most of my successes in life are persistence, as well as having a great memory. I really like working on conquering challenges and problem solving, especially with creative minds – as it leaves me inspired and fulfilled. Each day I wake up ready to embrace the day’s challenges and opportunities.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Great teamwork creates an undeniable energy that drives innovation throughout the whole office. When I see my team working together with a solution-oriented attitude, I feel inspired. We are all learning – I learn new things every day, and it’s a huge part of being an entrepreneur. There’s truly no one better to learn from than your biggest stakeholders: your co-workers. My team teaches me every day: how to be a better executive, how to listen and how to motivate. It comes full circle.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Fun comes in many forms for us. One of my favorite team-building activities is hosting a regular innovation lunch for our solid-state battery science team called “Come With a Great Appetite and Great Ideas.” They can choose any cuisine and do not have to come prepared with any notes or projects to follow through – they just have to be present. It never fails to get the team excited. This team-building activity is effortless and allows people to speak without limitations.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
I wear a lot of hats and have to juggle several important items daily. It’s undeniably challenging, but it comes with the territory! I Attention to detail is a big part of my personality, and I’m actively engaged in every single department – making sure the team feels motivated and is progressing well. We are also in a complex capital extensive business: juggling different forms of finance and planning is a major challenge.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
I always stay persistent. Persistence has always helped me at every stage of my career. Coming from my tough, humble childhood in India – failure has never been an option for me. Success in a country of over a billion people simply boils down to persistence, hard work and a “never give up” attitude. Fast forward to today, and there’s been plenty of lessons learned. That’s part of being an entrepreneur. But that just motivates me more.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Brace for impact. This path ain’t for the faint-hearted.

What I love most about my job is the ability to go out into the marketplace and positively impact people and their businesses. At Top Class Installations we bring businesses efficiency to life by installing the products sold by our vendors. We increase the safety and productivity of drivers and their vehicles. In my opinion, this is a snowball effect. We help one company better their operations and that ultimately snowballs down to their customers, their employees and most importantly, their families.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
My family! Everything I do is done with intent and is used to set the prime example to my children. A mentor once told me to do everything in life as if my grandchildren were watching.

I want my children to see that I work on myself daily to become the best version of me possible.

This is actually very challenging for Top Class Installations as we are a 100% remotely based team. However, we meet in person quarterly and always find time to break bread and playfully poke fun at each other. During the summer months, we hold an annual company barbecue and spend the day interacting as friends and family rather than co-workers and colleagues. On more of a personal level, I find it important to get out from behind the desk. I sometimes go for a drive or head down to the water and take a few moments to take in the scenery. This helps inspire and re-invigorate the drive to continually better myself, my business, and most importantly… my team.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge we face is hiring skilled technicians. There are several out there, but we find it hard to find techs that fit our company values.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
A lesson learned from a past project is to keep you hiring pipeline full at all times. You never know when you will need to ramp up the team size quickly to complete a project within a tight deadline.

About 2 years ago we completed a project for the New York City Board of Education. We installed GPS tracking systems in approximately 6000 school buses. Since our hiring pipeline was not full at the onset of this project, it forced us to hire subcontractors at an extremely high data rate per technician. Although the project was completed on time and within budget, this negatively affected our overall profitability. Had we the resources in place prior, we would have had a much larger pool of talent and resources to choose from that ultimately would have cost us less money.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Get clear on your core values ASAP! Without the necessary clarity and direction provided by your core values, you have nothing to gauge opportunities that appear to see if they truly align with your purpose and mission.

Many years of hard work were wasted at Top Class because we lacked this clarity. It may seem like a big waste of time at first, but without them, you are just a big ship floating around the ocean which is at the mercy of the sea. You need to set a course and stick to it. Core values will help you stay on that course.

Pop Quiz, Monday with Deborah Sweeney

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Tell us about your company?
MyCorporation provides online filing services to entrepreneurs and small business owners. Our startup bundles include corporation and LLC formation and trademark and copyright filing services.

What do you love most about your job?
Our team! I love all of the talented team members I work alongside each and every day.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Our customers. We help incorporate new businesses every day. It’s exciting to be a part of an entrepreneur’s startup journey from the beginning and to get them on the right track.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Our team members want to know what else they can do to help out. They always take initiative, work hard, and look for ways to improve existing processes.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We host potlucks to celebrate the holidays, hold ‘Camp MyCorp’ events in the summer and have ’12 Days of Magic at MyCorp’ for the winter holidays.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
This is a challenge many entrepreneurs face, but I think a big one is trying to determine where to allocate my time each day. A given day only affords so much time, so it’s important that you make good decisions and fill the day with the best agenda items that show you are thoughtful about the way you spend your time.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
It’s not exactly a project, but over the years as our company has grown, we have hired new team members. Sometimes, this can create cultural challenges with ‘lifers’ who may see the new team members as competition. We involve as many different team members from different parts of the company in the hiring process as possible and open up communication to enable everyone to get to know one another. Doing so allows us not too stagnant and continue to grow while giving everyone on the team the opportunity to contribute and be involved.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Incorporate or form an LLC for your business. This is key for anyone starting a company because it allows you to protect and separate your personal and professional assets and establish credibility.
