Unboxing the Mind

person holding black and orange typewriter

Formulating any type of content takes time. Understanding the context, jotting down the first thoughts, research work, and finally framing it on paper is a process undertaken probably by every content creator. Of course for some step four can come before step two, but we all revolve around the above mentioned four standard procedures.

However, when I moved from writing core journalism pieces (straight news, editorial articles) to creating marketing content for a brand, I realized that there is a crucial factor which was needed to be addressed before starting to operate on the four standard procedures. That is, unboxing the mind and keep yourself open to writing on a wide variety of content. My journey in content creation has seen a similar trend which I intend to share with you.

My first experience of writing published content was on sports websites. I love football, and I enjoyed writing about it. Analysis of players, football matches was my cup of tea. As my articles were getting published I thought they were quite good and I saw myself only as a football writer. I did journalism in my Masters with the idea that to be a sports journalist covering just football. While there was nothing wrong in what I wanted to pursue, I shut my mind towards creating or even thinking about content in any other category. In short, I boxed myself.

Post my Masters; I took up journalism on a freelance basis in different places. These experiences forced me to step out of my box and write about topics which I never thought I could and more importantly never wanted to. Topics such as politics, crime, culture, society were never on my plate, or instead, I never allowed them to be on my plate as a writer. However, as I started to write on such worldly issues, I realized that to be a journalist (or content creator in general), I can’t bind myself around one particular beat.

Delving in marketing content has been the biggest challenge until now. Not only because I am writing content for a healthcare organization, something about which I was highly skeptical, but also because marketing content is aimed towards pulling target customers to your brand. My current employment is where I had to completely shed my barrier regarding what type of content I wished to write. This was a category where I entered with zero knowledge and where I had to create engaging content for an industry is not the most marketable.

I am new to marketing content and even in the field of marketing as such, but suffice to say that I am quite confident about my work. Throughout my journey till now, I understood that there is no “wish” or “want” if you want to be a content creator. It is about taking off the shackles and take an interest in whatever comes your way.

If one wants to become a content creator, then they must love “content” in totality and not only specific categories. Unbox the mind and then see the wonders you create for yourself.

How Start-ups can overcome business competition

Be it any business domain or industry, competition is a given fact and is as inevitable as death and taxes for every individual.

Additionally, start-up entrepreneurs in diverse industry domains often face direct competition from a large multinational company with their global reach, resources, and high market share. When it comes to large investments and traditional marketing reach, most start-up companies are unable to match up to these multi-billion-dollar companies and end up on the losing side of the business most of the times.

An estimated 19% of start-up failures are primarily because of strong competition.

Despite the challenges, start-up entrepreneurs can adopt several innovative business strategies to get the better of their competition, including large business corporations.

Monitor constantly what the competitor is doing

Most successful business enterprises like to focus on their own product offerings and services and how they can deliver them effectively to their customer base. While this strategy is important, it is equally important to monitor what the competitors are doing, particularly on what product mix they are offering and the quality of customer experience for their services. Monitoring or keeping a tab on your competition does not mean blindly copying their product design or services but adapting their successful product strategy or innovation to work for the start-up business.

In the digital and online age, monitoring business competitors is comparatively easy as start-up entrepreneurs can get valuable information by visiting the competitor’s website and online social platforms. Young entrepreneurs can also develop their product and marketing strategies based on the successful and unsuccessful business moves made by their competitors.

Listen to what the customer is saying

As a start-up business, customer acquisition and retaining is the most important factor for business growth. Large corporations with a worldwide customer base are rarely concerned about what their customers want. This can be a major advantage for start-up businesses, who need to listen to what their customers want and deliver products and innovations that can fulfil their expectations. Develop a work environment in the start-up company that is very customer-centric and is completely focussed on their needs. Customer service must be the top business priority and can be delivered through digital platforms such as Twitter and other social media platforms.

Build a strong product or service offering

Did you know that 17% of the start-up business failure is because they failed to build a good product or service?

Building a good product or service is paramount to the growth or even survival of any business enterprise, including start-ups. Focus on the product (or service) strengths and what they can offer that your competitor cannot. If your product does not offer any business leverage as compared to your competitor’s product, it is best to go back to redesigning the product.

As Richard Branson, founder and CEO of Virgin Group mentions, “For me, building a business is all about creating something that’s going to make a real difference to other people’s lives.”

Keep track of the company’s financials

Business enterprises, including start-up companies, are eventually all about numbers including revenues, profits, costs of operations, sales figures, and market share. Product marketeers are often faced with numerous questions, including:

  • Do I know the cost benefit of capturing a higher market share?
  • Is my product pricing too high or too low?
  • What is the capital investment or financing required to achieve my company goals and targets?

Focus on achieving the right level of business profitability. While high product prices can reduce your competitive edge, low product prices can eat into your company’s profits, particularly if the production costs are high.

Utilize all available resources.

While large business enterprises have the best of professional resources, start-up companies can also utilize the best of production tools to cut down their costs and improve their productivity.

Some of the popular tools include the:

  • AdRoll advertising tool with cross-platform customer targeting and prospecting, all at a very affordable cost.
  • IBM Watson Analytics software tool that can provide valuable business insights through its Big data predictive analytics and data visualization features.
  • GetResponse email-based marketing tool that can help track and monitor the success of your business emails.

Focus on the sales and marketing

While effective sales and marketing is the lifeline of any company, inefficient marketing practices such as spending too much money, or a poorly-designed marketing campaign can tarnish the business potential and reputation of any business enterprise. Be prepared to toil the hard way by developing and sticking to the business strategies that can work for your product or business line.

While larger corporations can generate more market reach through their marketing and advertising initiatives, start-up business enterprises can look at innovative modes of digital and content marketing to create a successful online presence for their brands. Thanks to digital technologies, start-ups can adopt smart marketing and selling tactics and product branding to overcome their competition.

Build your business the start-up way

Young entrepreneurs must be determined to build their start-up company from the bottom and work their way up. This is true for every successful business enterprise including the likes of Facebook, Uber, Tesla, and Airbnb. Along with a good product niche and business strategy, do not hesitate to put in the required long days into business growth, which will lead to the overall success of the start-up and in overcoming the best of competitions.

As an entrepreneur, determine to succeed in your enterprise and do not feel dejected if prospective customers decline to meet you. In the face of any major business adversity, be prepared to pivot the business with a fresh mindset and enthusiasm, which is the bedrock of all start-up business enterprises.

These are just some of the successful business strategies that young entrepreneurs can adopt to make their start-up companies a raging success in the face of stiff competition from established corporations. Go, find your niche!.

Outside-In vs. Inside-Out Thinking

In the world of customer experience, what’s the difference between outside-in and inside-out? And why is this important?

Inside-out thinking means your focus is on processes, systems, tools, and products that are designed and implemented based on internal thinking and intuition. The customer’s needs, jobs, and perspectives do not play a part in this type of thinking; they aren’t taken into consideration. You make decisions because you think it’s what’s best for the business – not for customers. Or you think you know what’s best for customers.

On the other hand, outside-in thinking means that you look at your business from the customer’s perspective and subsequently design processes, tools, and products and make decisions based on what’s best for the customer and what meets the customer’s needs. You make decisions because you know it’s what’s best for your customers. Why? Because you listen to them, and you understand them and the jobs they are trying to do.

It might be inside-out thinking when there’s a conscious decision to make process, policy, people, systems, or other changes that:

  1. Don’t improve the customer experience at the same time
  2. Are about maximizing shareholder returns, not about benefits for the customer
  3. Improve internal efficiencies but to the detriment of customer interactions
  4. Are cost-cutting measures that also negatively impact the  customer experience
  5. Might be the wrong process, policy, people, or systems to change

By contrast, outside-in thinking flips each of those points on its head and looks like this. There’s a conscious decision to make process, policy, people, systems, or other changes that:

  1. Improve the customer experience at the same time
  2. Are about maximizing benefits for the customer
  3. Improve internal efficiencies known to be pain points when executing customer interactions
  4. Are cost-cutting measures that significantly improve the customer experience
  5. Are the right process, policy, people, or systems because you’ve listened to customer feedback and know how customers are affected

It’s clear that outside-in thinking is the way to go. It leads to a number of things, none of which you’ll get by making decisions that are not based on what’s best for your customers…

  • reduced complaints
  • increased satisfaction
  • increased referrals
  • increased repeat purchases
  • improved ease of doing business
  • fewer lost customers

These then translate to reduced costs and increased revenue for the business.

How can we ensure that we’re operating in an outside-in manner? Here are some tips.

  • Understand customers and what they are trying to do
  • Use that understanding to develop products for the customer, products that solve their problems and help them do what they are trying to do
  • Listen to customers at all key touchpoints
  • Close the loop with customers on their feedback
  • Act on what you hear
  • Share the feedback and ensure it’s used throughout the organization to make decisions and to design the best experience for your customers
  • Do right by the customer; ask “Is this decision what’s best for the customer?”
  • Reduce customer effort rather than making the experience convoluted and confusing
  • Save a seat in the room (a la Jeff Bezos’ empty chair) for the customer/customer’s voice
  • Map customer journeys and ensure all employees – frontline and back office – have a clear line of sight to how they impact the customer experience
  • Talk about customers and what they are saying

The customer and her voice must be incorporated into all decisions, design, and development initiatives. Weave the customer’s voice into your organization’s DNA and watch what happens.

Step-by-Step Guide to Content Marketing

Content marketing is a long term marketing strategy that helps you build a strong relationship with your target audiences, using high quality content that is relevant and delivered on a consistent basis. Content marketing can help show that you care about your customers and, in today’s world, many customers will choose a company that cares over some other competitors. Since content marketing is a long-term strategy, it’s necessary to come up with a plan that will be successful.

Your Unique Selling Proposition: There are going to be similar products and services to yours on the market, and you need to start figuring our what makes your product better or different. This way, you can let your customers know through your content.

Figure Out Your Target Market: Getting to know the audience you are creating content for is a necessary first step, in order to have this strategy work for your business. It’s possible that your business may have more than one type of customer, so you going to have to create content for each audience segment. You can use a variety of content channels and types to deliver content to each one of your audiences. Make sure that each of your customers gets what they need from your company.

The Problem Your Content Is Going to Solve: Each audience has their own set of problems that your product or service should be solving. The content you should be creating will let each audience know how the service or product is going to help solve their problems. There should be content for both sides: for those who are still figuring out the challenges and those who are already using the product or service to overcome the challenges.

Figure Out Which Content Formats to Focus On: Content can take many forms, whether it’s a video, blog post, eBook, or infographic. Having some topics that address some of the issues you have already identified can help determine which types of content to use. It’s not enough to figure out what type of content you are going to create, you also need to have a plan in place for who is going to create this content. This is especially true if you don’t have a dedicated team in place. Having each piece of content in one place, such as a content calendar, can make it easier to visualize the message you want to send and the types of content to produce.

Figure Out How to Publish Content: Once you have content created, that is only half the battle. You also need to decide where content is going once it’s created. Does it go on the website? Are you going to post videos on YouTube? Are you then going to share content to your social media accounts?

Figure Out Which Tools to Use: You don’t necessarily need any tools for content marketing, but it can make the whole process a lot easier. If multiple people in the company are going to be responsible for content, then have a place where it’s easy to collaborate, whether that is Google Drive or some other system. Also, tools that make content distribution easier, such as Hootsuite, can make managing social media channels simple and also give some insight into what content is performing the best. This will help you know if you need to tweak your strategy.

Set Goals for Content Marketing: It’s important to have goals when implementing a marketing strategy, and content marketing is no different. These goals should be able to be measured. What do you want your content to accomplish? If you know your goals before planning out your content, it can be easier to determine the best types of content. If one of your goals is to educate customers on how your product works because it’s new in the marketplace, then you already have built-in content topics to help reach this goal.

Do Persona Research: You should already know your target audience if you follow the first step, but how well do you really know them? Sometimes marketers find it helpful to create a whole persona for their target audience. Your target market could also change over time, so be sure to check in with your personas from time to time to make sure your content is still delivering the most relevant information.

Run a Content Audit: You may already have some content created and you don’t want it to go to waste if you can still use it. If the content is still relevant to your audience, use it in your existing strategy. If the content is a little outdated, figure out ways to revamp it. Sometimes it’s easier to reuse old content than create brand new content.

Revisit Your Goals: Once you have started creating and publishing content, you will need to revisit your goals in order to see if your strategy is working. Remember that this is a long-term strategy, so you will need to make changes as your products or services change, if your goals aren’t being met, and as your business grows. You can gather feedback using polls or surveys, see the comments sections of blogs and social media, and monitor traffic and engagement. Don’t forget to also engage with your consumers. Your customers can help guide you in the direction where your content marketing should go. If they have the same questions that come up on social media or blog posts, create content to answer them.

How to Get Sponsors for Your Blog?

Sponsors on your website or blog come in different forms. They can be a sponsored post published on your site, or a social media campaign, or an advertisement for a company product. Sponsors are another means of income for your blog because they get to pay you monetary compensation if work with them and offer them what they want in your platform. If you gain the right sponsors, they can help your blog establish a good reputation in line with your chosen niche.

How to Get Sponsors for Your Blog?

“person using iPad” by rawpixel on Unsplash

This problem is a common question in every bloggers’ journey. Moreover, getting sponsorship also measures your success in the online blogging platform. So, if you wish your blog to be as successful as others, we provided tips that can help you do just that. Below are some ways to get sponsors for your blog.

1. Look for new sponsors. Sponsors will not find you (unless your blog already established good traffic) if they do not know that you exist. However, if you only have a newer one, you can start by searching for blogs whose contents are similar with yours. Then see who advertises on their sites. Approach these companies saying that you’re open for sponsorship, and if they write you back, grab the opportunity. You can also write a blog post about your availability for sponsorships! This tactic is something most bloggers forget to do, when in fact, they can utilize their blogs to attract sponsors. However, you had to keep in mind that you only have to choose sponsor companies related to your niche. Also, please avoid your blog look spammy with a lot of sponsored contents. You can post non-sponsored materials from time to time.

2. Establish loyal followers. “Loyal followers” indicate those people who regularly visit your blog and read your content. They are the ones who are genuinely interested in your site. Loyal followers engage with your blog more, and they consume your materials frequently. However, your followers don’t have to be so many for your blog to be considered as successful. You have to have loyal followers for the sponsor companies to see your blog as possessing a good influence. In that way, they’ll feel more compelled to let you feature their products.

3. Create reading-worthy contents. This philosophy will serve as the lifeline of your blog. If your content is not good, not many followers will engage, and lesser potential sponsors will be attracted to your site. So, before you entirely focus your attention on seeking sponsors, you had to make sure that your blog is something that is worth their money. Also, when people visit your site and see your contents, they should tend to create an impression on their minds that your blogs are trustworthy.

4. Post consistently. Your consistency is a critical, essential factor that will make or break your blog. If you only post for like, once a week, expect that lower traffic will engage. However, if you post consistently, and you engage with your followers more often, then, your blog will attract more traffic, and maybe if fortunate enough, lots of potential sponsors will take notice of your site and would be willing to build a strong working relationship with you.

So now, you already found your perfect match (sponsor match!). What are you going to do to keep them and make it a long-term contract? MAKE THEIR TIME AND MONEY WORTH IT! You had to produce successful outputs. Every. Single. Time. You had to make them unregretful that they chose your blog as their advertisement platform. If they pay you $400 for a sponsored post, make it like it’s worth $500! Make your sponsors feel that you value your relationship with them and that you want what’s best, not only for your site but also for their company. They’ll more likely be compelled to give you additional projects. That’s an advantage on your part. It will not only make you gain higher blog traffic, but it will also make your site a potential platform for other sponsors. So of course, with the booming sponsorship, you’ll surely gain higher monetary income! Success is indeed on its way.

Facebook Marketing Tips for Beginners

Photo by Tim Bennett on Unsplash

It will not be wrong to say that Facebook is one of the most powerful marketing platforms these days! Thanks to more than 1 million new users joining the Facebook community every day, it is one of the fastest growing online portals in the world.

The current market scenario is that if you want your business to have maximum customer outreach, you have to promote your business on Facebook! Therefore it becomes crucial for every budding entrepreneur who wants to do marketing on Facebook to learn these marketing tips that make a significant impact on their promotional strategies.

Create the “business page” for your venture:

When you are promoting a business, you need to create a “page” and the personal profile for your brand. The Facebook pages have specialized tools for various themes as per your business type for example- art and craft and construction.

One can use these unique tools clubbed with specific images to enhance the online presence and state the one of a kind marketing prowess of their business. People can like your page to get updates from you in their news feed which is not possible when you form a personal profile.

Get a perfect profile picture and cover photo:

“The first impression is the last impression”- keeping this quote in mind we suggest you create a lasting yet subtle impression on the users.

Your profile picture and the cover photo will give you the basic idea of what your followers or fans should see at first glance. Therefore, choose them wisely. You can use the brand logo as your profile picture or something that reflects your business standpoint.

Use a profile picture with high resolution so that your message can be passed loud and clear. Do not add readymade templates or frames on your profile picture as that diminishes the actual context of it.

For cover photo, you can try variants such as a brand slogan, brand pictures, latest developments in the business. The newest trend introduced by Facebook in cover photos is to upload cover videos as promotional content for your page.

Be very responsive to the messages

When you respond earnestly to the words of your fans and users, you can earn the badge of “very responsive to messages” or “responds early within 1 hour”. When people see that badge, they want to get connected with you as that creates the sense of “being attended to”! All you have to do is to reply to every message you receive in your inbox within a limited time frame and as fast as possible.

If you are quick at responding to messages, the frequency of your page’s latest updates and development in the news feed of the fans and followers of your page increases.

Do not post only the links

If you are a beginner, you must know that posting the links to your website or blog is not the only advisable content for Facebook promotions. To gain more followers for your Facebook business page, you need to experiment with your content. You can choose from a lot of free content, pictures, quotes of wisdom, quizzes that are available to engage the audience on your facebook page. It will draw more attention towards your work, and you will get an increased number of likes and follows.

Time your posts

Some of the Facebook algorithms are based on the timing of your posts, i.e., “when and how often” do you post the content!

When you have a schedule for your posts, for example, “every Saturday”- people look forward to your content. You will also have a strategy in place to deal with queries that come up regarding your new post. Choose that time post when your followers are most active on social media.

Keep an eye at the analytics

If you keep a regular check at the Facebook analytics, you will get a fair idea of following facts:
– which content is most liked and clicked upon
– which material has maximum viewers returning to it
– which content engages users for maximum time.
The analytics give you an insight of customer demands and expectations. You can create repetitive content or strategy to promote if it works in favor of your blog.

Facebook is based on specific algorithms, if you get them right; your online market presence gets empowered. Therefore, keep following our Facebook Marketing tips and make a remarkable difference to your Facebook presence.

Who knows better than a blogger or website owner the importance of good ranking for a website to sustain on Google? Therefore, it has been emphasized that a marketer should always do proper keyword research for every article and make sure that it is judiciously included in the content. The writers should explicitly know the importance and the conditions relative to the keyword proposition.

While researching for the keyword domain for your niche market, you get to learn about the terms that are relative and can be targeted with SEO. You get to learn about the choices and preferences of customers as well.

So let us learn as how to carry on the keyword research so that we get maximum traffic and higher rankings for your website

Lay foundation with the ‘SEED KEYWORDS’

The seed keywords are the foundations of the keyword research. These keywords help in defining the niche segment for the content and identifying the prevalent competition.

If you are looking forward to promoting your business online, seed keywords will play an important role in defining your product and its keyword searches.

For example, if you are selling Reebok brands shoes in your store, the seed keywords can be

– Reebok shoes

– Reebok latest trends

Find relevant keywords and terms

Since now you have specified the seed keywords, it is the time to research for the other relevant keywords and terms related to your content. These can be the phrases that are not so concise but define your business with the extension of a few words.
