The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Founder – Minding Her Business
Venture Capital (3 Businesses)
Tell us about your company?
Minding Her Business is a women’s networking brand that holds great events for women to come together and grow from one another. Guest speakers with plenty of wisdom share their life skills and experiences with our eager audiences while at the same time we allow for plenty of mingling so relationships can be formed on the day. Our brand has become an incubator for startups – since we have started 10 businesses have been formed from people that met for the first time at our events.
We are focused on growing the brand to allow more to access it Australia-Wide and increase the knowledge bases of all women in business in the process.
What do you love most about your job?
Seeing the impact, our events can have on people. Whether it be new friends, business partners, new motivations or even the wellness benefits we have seen with just people being happier after they come along – this is what truly fulfils me as a person. The success and money come second to the primary objective which was always just to allow a space for people to come and have a great day while learning a lot at the same time.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Knowing that there are still people out there, we have not had an impact on. We want our brand to connect with all women in Business to let them achieve their desires. The more we grow, the more people we can get in front of with our important messages.
A large component of our raffles also goes to charities, so we are always inspired to hand over those cheques after successful days out!
How do your co-workers inspire you?
Our team is single focused, they want the same things and have bought in totally to the mantra of ‘connect, collaborate and create.’ Watching them on event day, skip meals and exert themselves entirely just to make sure people have the best time is beyond inspiring.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We are lucky enough that we get to meet amazing people, our team really loves meeting the famous guest speakers and picking their brain before events. We get plenty of fun along the way at days like the food taste testing and dessert bar selection days – not something we complain about!
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Making sure that everyone has an amazing day. As a brand we have focused on keeping our events smaller and more intimate, this makes sure that everyone who comes along we can guarantee they have a good experience. Unfortunately, though some people miss out and although the temptation is there always to sell more tickets, we believe in what we stand for which is giving a great experience. More events in more areas will help us work through this allowing more people to access Minding Her Business.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
It is so important to stay motivated on the main things, and it is really easy to get sidetracked with the 1000s of opportunities that present themselves to us. Our focus now is on scaling the parts of the business we know and love. If we pursued all the opportunities, we would stop our growth and not be masters of our craft so knowing this from experience I have kept the accelerator on the things we do the best.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
The events business is a hard but rewarding game. You will need to have thick skin, unlike some industries you cannot patent or protect events and your intellectual property as easy. We have faced challenges from sources nearby who have tried just simply to replicate what it is we do. Instead of worrying about it, we have just worried about ourselves and making our events better for those who come to it.
Be tough and trust your own process and the right results will come to the good people out there who build things from scratch with authenticity.
