The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

What is your job role?
Director – Tenders and Bids

Tell us about your company?
The Tender Team provides bid and tender training and solutions to companies looking to secure private and government contracts.

What do you love most about your job?
The challenge of winning contracts for small to medium businesses especially when they have not been successful in the past. I also enjoy being involved in must-win tenders for larger corporations.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Winning. Winning contracts for our clients. I also enjoy the varied nature of industries whom we assist.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
They inspire me by working hard whilst maintaining a smile on their faces. I think many skills can be learned. It all comes down to hard work, and being a team player.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We go for walks. I know it sounds boring, but it’s great as its exercise and an excellent time to chat about things outside of work.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Gaining the trust of the clients to the point where we can provide constructive feedback that is taken on board and acted on. Another challenge is getting through the sheet volume of writing efficiently.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
We recently worked on a proposal for a large family-owned business. The tender response was progressing well. However, the CEO become involved in the last few hours and made changes to the detriment of the bid. The changes were fundamentally flawed, and we expressed this, however, he stuck to his guns. The tender was not successful, and in the feedback, there was a direct reference to the CEO’s changes. The lesson learnt is sometimes, if you know you are correct, you have to put your foot down regardless of whom you are in disagreement with.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Focus on quality. If you do a good job, you will be successful and gain the respect of the right people. It’s a small industry, so this will be critical to your success.
