The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Helping people sell and purchase homes and investment properties.
Tell us about your company?
I am a Realtor within a non-franchised brokerage that has ~650 agents. As a Realtor, I am an independent contractor – so, in essence, I am my own company within a company.
What do you love most about your job?
Hands down helping people blaze the path for their next step in home-ownership – whether it is a first time purchase or a final downsizing, getting them to the point of the perfect place is an amazing feeling every time.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Helping people make smart choices – not every conversation is about a sale. Helping with smart renovation/design is also part of what I do. Knowing that when I’ve helped revamp a home, and years later getting the call to help sell it – and having the upgrade pay off…that makes me super happy. Oftentimes my clients pay off bills and get super close to debt free living by making and implementing smart choices.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
I’m inspired by anyone who is passionate and productive with their work. Passion is great, but one has to implement and figure things out. Combine the two, and those people charge me to be better.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I’m easily amused…grabbing a quick lunch is usually fun.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Paperwork can seem endless. Making sure that my clients have a smooth transaction (sometimes there are hiccups). Goofy challenge = weather … it’s never fun showing homes in heavy snow/rain/etc
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Biggest lessons: As cliche as it is: Trust your gut (I took on a client when I was starting out that my gut told me not to. I didn’t listen, and the result was a series of super crazy twists and turns that became a huge rabbit hole that was difficult to get out of. Because of the chaos that resulted, I also learned what I was and wasn’t willing to accept in the behavior of others.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Be open-minded. What works for one person may not be your jam.
Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
