Pop Quiz, Monday with Walter Schindler

Walter Schindler

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
Walter Schindler

What is your job role?
Chairman & CEO

Tell us about your company?
Transformation is an investment holding company that offers strategic advisory, capital strategy, and project management for projects on the entire spectrum of energy.

What do you love most about your job?
The ability to have a large impact on one of the greatest challenges of our time: the convergence of technology with energy, water, agriculture, and real estate.

What motivates you to get up everyday and go to work?
I think that my team and I have worked hard to create a business that has a strong purpose. It’s a huge challenge, but knowing we are doing work that has purpose is what motivates me.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-workers know how to keep the morale up during the difficult times. Transformation is technically a start-up, so it comes with all the difficulties of a start-up. Their cheerfulness and positivity inspire me.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Since our local Newport team is small, we work in a co-working space. It’s fun to interact with other companies in the office and chat with them about what they’re up to. We enjoy going to lunch and taking in the Southern California weather. We have a lot of partners around the world, so wherever I’m at, I’ve always got a local partner to show me around.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge with Transformation, specifically, has been finding our voice as a new company. We thought advisory was simple, but it turns out there is a lot to it, especially in describing what we do to other people. We are still figuring out the best way to brand and market what we’re doing.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
From 15+ years of running my venture capital firm, SAIL Capital, one of the most important things I learned is that the synergy of the team is more important than their individual resumes. I’ve been very intentional about who we bring to the team.

What advice would you give to some one who is starting out in your industry?
Spend time learning from the best in the industry – create relationships with the people you meet, don’t just collect their business cards.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
