The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
As a Solutions Architect I build and integrate information and computer systems that meet specific needs. This typically involves integrating the software and hardware that will best meet the purpose defined by our customers. I also examine the current systems architecture, and work with business and technical teammates to recommend solutions that result in more effective systems.
Tell us about your company?
TG4 Solutions is a multi-discipline professional services firm based out of Austin, TX. The company employs approximately 10 individuals of various technical and professional backgrounds. TG4’s foundation is rooted in helping our clients achieve their dreams. Our mission is to help our clients make smarter decisions faster. Throughout our history our impact can be seen through the various small businesses and entrepreneurs we have helped to grow. The primary services offered include Software Engineering, Business Development, and Digital Marketing services. TG4 frequently provides technical services to other Information Technology and Digital Marketing companies.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the fact that I can actually see the benefit our solutions provide our clients. Because our typical client is a small business or non-profit every cost or time savings our solution can provide matters.
What motivates you to get up everyday and go to work?
The excitement that comes with seeing our clients achieve their goals.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
My coworkers inspire me by consistently bringing new and innovative ideas to the table everyday. Their ideas push me to continuously learn new ways to attack the same problem.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We have fun at work by celebrating events (e.g. birthdays, super bowl, NBA finals, & black history month). We also, have a basketball team in a local basketball league to help build team chemistry.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
I constantly have to balance speed vs. quality in everything I do. As a Solutions Architect, time and resources are the biggest constraints to the solutions I deliver. I have to use my knowledge of the business and understanding of customer needs to determine the best solution that will provide the most value within the provided timeline.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
It is better to over communicate than to under communicate. When working with multiple stakeholders, it is best to communicate updates through multiple mediums and to follow up to ensure everyone is on the same page. This especially holds true when issues exists or deadlines are at risk of not being met. From previous experience, just sending an email won’t suffice. So be diligent and relentless, when communicating high priority information.
What advice would you give to some one who is starting out in your industry?
I would advise anyone starting out in IT to ask plenty of questions. Understand why things are done the way they are. Having this understanding will help to provide a better perspective and enable you to make better decisions.
