Pop Quiz, Monday with Dr. Heather Rothbauer-Wanish

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
Certified Professional Resume Writer

Tell us about your company?
My company is Feather Communications, a freelance writing company that I started in 2008. Currently, my main focus is working with job seekers to develop resumes and cover letters for today’s job market.

What do you love most about your job?
I have a passion for helping others describe their achievements, accomplishments, and skills in written form. Most people don’t give themselves enough credit, and I enjoy bringing out that information and giving them confidence during their job search.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
For me, there is nothing better than receiving a call or email from a client who lands their dream job. Or, discovering that a client landed an interview in just a few days with his or her new resume. That confidence spurs them toward new life and career opportunities.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
While I am a sole business owner, I do have a network of business contacts through various networking groups that inspire me to think creatively, develop new business ideas, and make a difference in the lives of my clients.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Some of the challenges with my position are learning the correct questions to ask clients to draw out the information I need to properly describe their job history. In addition, a challenge is ensuring that I maintain a positive mindset regarding securing new clients, building those networking contacts, and consistently driving innovation to provide clients with new services.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
One of my favorite past projects was completing a resume and then discovering the client landed a new job opportunity in California. Not only was she able to move from the Midwest to the West Coast, her children moved with her, too. It made me realize that while I help people with resumes, I’m really helping them change their lives and the lives of their families.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Be consistent and patient. When I started as a resume writer, I wasn’t sure that new clients would contact me or if I was ready to be an entrepreneur. However, I made sure I joined networking groups, became a member of professional associations, and was consistent about blogging and letting others know this was my business–not just a hobby.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
