Pop Quiz, Monday with Adam Pearce

Adam Pearce

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
Adam Pearce

What is your job role?
Marketing Director

Tell us about your company?
Blend Commerce are a Shopify Expert e-commerce agency who work with growing online brands. In a nutshell, we have a team of designers, developers, and marketers that use various tools to help Shopify businesses sell more.

What do you love most about your job?
Seeing our client’s businesses grow is a huge buzz. When most of our clients start with Shopify, they’re often at the start of their journey. It’s a great feeling to see a thriving business as a result of my teams input.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Achieving something great. Yes, of course, money is important, but knowing that we are constantly building a bigger and bigger business gives me an enormous sense of pride.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Thinking differently than I do. Working with designers, developers and marketers means we all perceive different projects and situations differently. I love working in cross-functional teams, as you really do get amazed by different approaches our team takes.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Eating! As my business partner is South African, we regularly ‘braai’ – like a South African BBQ. We have one at our offices, and even in winter, we have a big cookout and beers.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Keeping up to date with all of the advances in apps, platforms, and technology is always tricky. As we have a culture of learning in the business, we rely heavily on each other to keep up to date with what is changing with the tools we use and the needs of our Shopify clients.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Only take on projects your passionate about. In the past, we took on a project with a high project value, but working with a business that did not have good products or enthusiastic leaders was difficult. Ultimately, it meant that what we achieved for the business was far less than our usual standards, and it was this lack of passion all round that was a big factor. We’ve learned that we need to be excited about a project and only take on these projects.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Now is a great time to get involved in Shopify development and marketing, and the best way to get started is by attending a Shopify meetup and building up a network of Shopify related contacts. As Shopify is very much based around community, you’ll find lots of resources and helpful people to give advice and guidance.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
