Pop Quiz, Monday with Rafe Gomez
The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Tell us about your company?
VC Inc. Marketing is an award-winning provider of sales support and business strategy services for organizations around the world. Our clients include startups and established organizations in a variety of industries – including tech, hospitality, education, sustainability, and venture capital.
What do you love most about your job?
I love being able to deliver innovative business-building results that deliver tremendous value and ROI to my clients. I also really enjoy their enthusiasm and excitement when I’m able to ideate, implement, and launch solutions that exceed their expectations.
What motivates you to get up everyday and go to work?
Everyday, I’m inspired to be both a functionary (who keeps things moving on the assembly line) as well as a visionary (who imagines new, unexpected, and memorable ideas that will solve a need, goal, or challenge) for my clients.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-owner and partner inspires me with fresh perspectives, unique POVs, and clear headed scrutiny of complex conundrums.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I have an office in a co-working space, so to keep things light and fun, I shoot the breeze with a solopreneur down the hall who has a similar jaded outlook, cantankerousness, and twisted sense of humor.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge of my job is to consistently surpass the previous successes that I’ve brought to fruition for my clients. I’m only as awesome as my most recent win, so to be indispensable, I have to keep serving up fresh, warm, and sweet piles of amazing.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson for a service provider or consultant is to keep track of the expiration dates of your client contracts. If you aren’t aware when an agreement is about to expire, your receivables could be slowed down since a new/updated agreement takes time to write up and be approved.
What advice would you give to some one who is starting out in your industry?
Be sure to figure out a way to position yourself as the first and only provider of what you’re selling. If clients can’t get what you’re making available from anyone else, and if you can clearly/concisely/convincingly explain how and why your version is so invaluable, you’ll have a much easier time locking in new business.
