The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

What is your job role?
I am the Founder & CEO at Peter Strohkorb Consulting International Pty Ltd, a boutique consulting and advisory firm specialising in sales and marketing transformations. We help businesses in the b2b technology sector to build and grow their sales revenue and profits.
Tell us about your company?
We have had spectacular success in boosting sales results through focusing on customer needs, rather than product and service features. Our clients tell us that we are easy to deal with and less expensive than they thought. That we boost Sales Revenue by between 5 and 50%, depending on the size of the business, that we deliver results in just weeks, not months, and that we return more than 10-times their investment in us.
What do you love most about your job?
Not many things are more soul destroying than seeing your business languish. I have always loved the idea of helping people, so I enjoy seeing the relief and joy that new growth and success brings to CEOs, business owners and business unit leaders.
What motivates you to get up everyday and go to work?
On the one hand there is the joy that my work brings to people who previously thought they had run out of ideas.
And on the other hand, I enjoy being able to support my family and to keep them safe in a comfortable lifestyle.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
I surround myself with people who share the same values as me. That does not mean that I cultivate group-think. We can have very different perspectives on business and on life yet hold the same standards and values in high regard. I like to think that we inspire each other to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
There is a time for working and there is a time for fun. We aim to enjoy our work and the results that we bring to our clients and the rewards that brings to our families and to ourselves. We aim to not take ourselves too seriously and we make sure that we keep each other in check and make time for the important things in life that are not work-related.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Business is constantly changing, particularly in the tech sector. We need to keep abreast of new technologies and trends without being drawn into fads. We work in a fast-paced and dynamic industry. There is always lots to do and not always enough resources to do it with, so we have to be disciplined and prioritise. This is not always easy to do.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Wow, there are so many. We learn something every day, even if it is just something small. Never assume that you know what the customer wants is one example, even when they tell you what they want.
Another is that there is always more than one way of looking at a problem. For our clients we like to think outside the box and see things from their customers’ perspectives. This gives us the clarity we need to bring success to our clients.
What advice would you give to some one who is starting out in your industry?
Be prepared. It is exciting to jump head-first into a new venture, but it can lead you down the wrong path. So, talk to the people in the industry you want to break into and ask for advice long before you start. You’ll be surprised how many good people will offer their advice and guidance freely if you just ask in the right way. Do this to make sure that you have a viable business model, scalable business processes and enough financial reserves to survive the start-up phase. Lastly, learn from each mistake and move on. Don’t fret them, life is too short for regrets.
