Pop Quiz, Monday with David McClellan

David McClellan

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
David McClellan

What is your job role?

Tell us about your company?
We (Social Catfish) helps people find and verify other people online. We mainly deal with people who are dating and meeting other people online. I also own another company called Berify.com where we help photographers, lawyers and marketers find out if their images are being used online.

What do you love most about your job?
I love having an impact. We’ve been able to grow our businesses each year at a growth rate of 300%. It’s been incredible and is incredible to see the impact you have on other people who use your service.

What motivates you to get up everyday and go to work?
I want to keep the pace that we’re on and I set big goals. I’m super hungry and have always had this drive.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
As an employer, I love the fact that we can help make an impact on our employees’ lives. It’s one of the things that drive me to do better so that we can do more for them. I hire people who have different skill sets than me. A lot of the time their smarter than me and that challenges me.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We do team building every single month. These are typically activities where we shut down business for 2-3 hours and the entire company goes out to lunch and we do things like race go-karts, go to an escape room and give back to our community. The team building is something that is so important. It’s one way we show appreciation for our employees and allows everyone to bond in different ways that they wouldn’t normally have a chance to inside a work environment.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
As we continue to grow, keeping the same trajectory and establishing goals that are realistic become harder and harder. When we first started, there were so many opportunities that didn’t require a lot of resources. Now we’re working business development deals that can take a year to manufacture, building out cool new tools that are months away. We have to be a lot more strategic with how we prioritize our wins and continue to stay motivated to hit our targets.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Just do it. A lot of people want everything to be perfect. Build the basic version of your product that people will be happy with and then launch. A lot of entrepreneurs get wrapped up in perfection and delay making money. Just go out and do it.

What advice would you give to some one who is starting out in your industry?
It’s a super competitive industry. Finding niches within crowded industries that haven’t been exploited are some of the best ways to make waves and break into specific industries. It allows you to capitalize on areas where your competitors might have ignored and then allows you to continue to scale and grow.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
