Pop Quiz, Monday with John Hill

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

What is your job role?
Founder

Tell us about your company?
We work with small business owners and entrepreneurs to make sales more approachable. We create documented sales processes and match them up with a customized CRM solution so that we capture more data about sales.

What do you love most about your job?
Helping people understand that sales aren’t a natural talent, but a skill that you can improve on.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I enjoy talking about sales and helping people think about sales differently. There is such a stigma around sales and salespeople that many people who would be great at it will never even try it. I am trying to reduce that stigma.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
It is just me and some contractors for large projects.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
With it just being me, I make sure that I get everything done each day that I need to, to keep the business moving. I have great relationships with all my clients, and that keeps it fun.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
It can be lonely- I rely on my networking connections and friends to keep that at bay.

Prioritizing big work- I get lulled into black holes of time just like everyone else. I work on doing this less.

Scale- I am trying to make sure that I don’t do anything that will make this hard to scale in the future.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Assumptions- this is something I talk about a lot, but it is too easy to assume that your client knows everything you do. If they did, they probably wouldn’t hire you. Slow down and make sure that you discuss expectations, deliverables, and make sure that everyone is on the same page.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Go sell and get clients before you focus on marketing and a website. I got my first clients before the site was even an idea, it is still just a landing page, because I had people who were willing to listen to me.
Perfect is the enemy of the good. You have forever to polish and perfect, for now, you have just to get started.
