Pop Quiz, Monday with Sandy Yong

Sandy Yong

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
Sandy Yong

What is your job role?
Author, Speaker, Investor of The Money Master.

Tell us about your company?
I am an author of the upcoming book, “The Money Master: Inside Secrets On How To Make Your Money Grow and Stay Safe.” This book is focused on three pillars: creating your own financial portfolio, investing in real estate and entrepreneurship. I discuss these three ways people can start earning multiple streams of income and build their wealth. It teaches a step-by-step plan on how individuals can overcome their fears and failures and get back on track to achieve financial success.

As a proud member of Toastmasters International for the past three years, I have been mastering my professional speaking skills. Now I am able to combine my passion of personal finance with professional speaking and help educate adults on financial literacy through workshops and conferences.

In addition, I am honoured to be partnering with CAMH: Centre of Addiction and Mental Health to support mental health research and families who have been impacted. $2 of each book sold will be donated to this charity.

My vision is to make people feel comfortable having conversations about money and mental health since they can be touchy subjects. Yet these are topics that have an impact on our daily lives. As a proud female author, investor and speaker, I am dedicated to helping women’s organizations and empowering young professionals to become financially independent.

What do you love most about your job?
I enjoy being able to share my message with the world by teaching adults how they can become financially independent by creating multiple streams of income. I find it very gratifying when I receive testimonials on how I have helped individuals become smarter with managing their money.

What motivates you to get up everyday and go to work?
Everyday that I am working on my book, means that I’m one step closer to having my book published! I can’t wait for the world to read it and learn the many valuable tips that are provided. Plus, as part of my research for my book, I conducted numerous interviews with financial and real estate experts! I am also looking forward to speaking on personal finance and investing at upcoming workshops and seminars.

As a Chinese-Canadian female entrepreneur, I feel that it is important to help empower other women. We are capable of changing the world and if I can help provide them with financial literacy tools, I feel that it is my way to give back to others and help pay it forward.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My writing coach Barry Spilchuk and my book publisher, Black Card Books have been incredible. They have guided me throughout my authorship journey and given me many wonderful ideas that I have incorporated into the chapters of my book.

In addition, my husband, Albert Ho, is writing a medical sales book called “Checkmate: How To Win The Sales Game in Healthcare”. As a husband and wife team, writing two books simultaneously, we help support and motivate each other. Sometimes, we have friendly competitions to help push us forward and achieve our goals.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I work in a home office and our team has virtual meetings online or through conference calls. It’s great to have the flexibility to work remotely and still be connected globally with all my team members.

Recently, I have been attending book launches and meeting fellow authors to support them and also learn from their experience. I think that its important to share knowledge and continue our education after we graduate from college or university. Just because you have a degree, doesn’t mean you should stop learning. Whether its through books, podcasts, seminars, events, I think we can always learn something new everyday.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Sometimes you’ll face rejection whether it is securing a deal but once you get more practice and become more comfortable, it gets easier and eventually people will come to you for opportunities.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
I have learned that we don’t need to be a jack-of-all-trades. Just focus on your strengths and what you’re really great at. If you try to do everything and be everything, then you are prone to spreading yourself too thin. It’s better to focus on one thing and excel at it, instead of focusing on many things and being mediocre at all of them.

What advice would you give to some one who is starting out in your industry?
I feel that financial literacy is severely lacking and it is important to educate people about this topic. I decided that writing a book and speaking at conferences and workshops would help to bridge the gap in financial knowledge so that people can become empowered with their money. If you have ever wished to become an author and run a book and speaking business, I encourage you to do so! It will take a lot of hard work and dedication but it will be worth it when you know that at the end of the day you are changing people’s lives.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
