Pop Quiz, Monday with Hasara Lay

Hasara Lay

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
Hasara Lay

What is your job role?
Founder & Chief Explorer

Tell us about your company?
Catexplorer is a community, movement & lifestyle brand for people who explorer the world with their cats.

We’re pet owners who aim to give our cats the world, by taking them hiking, to bookstores, and even to brunch.

What do you love most about your job?
I love being able to provide a sense of belonging to so many people and enabling them to see what their cat is capable of.

Walking a cat is still something new, even though many people (including myself) have been doing it for a while. Catexplorer has enabled these people to connect with each other, share their challenges, experiences and lessons learnt.

Due to the support they have received via Catexplorer, many cats have had many firsts – the first walk, the first road trip, the first car ride and so much more. It has helped expand the boundaries of how we can give our cats the world.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
That’s easy – our community.

They are honestly the most supportive group of people who are so willing to share.

There are some incredible stories. We have members whose cats have helped them through mental health challenges. Some members volunteer at many animal shelters to help animals in need. Some cats are blind or have neurological disorders (in some cases both) and make the most of each day.

Being able to help each of these people and cats, even in a small way, makes my day.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
As a solo entrepreneur, I don’t necessarily have co-workers within Catexplorer.

However, I have been lucky to work with some amazing people to bring Catexplorer to life and to grow it.

I’m very picky about choosing the businesses I work with, as they need to believe in Catexplorer and have the same values.

I’ve been lucky, by being picky I have come across some incredible entrepreneurs. They each inspire me with how they utilise their skills, their creativity and how willing they are to go above and beyond for Catexplorer.

Catexplorer would not be what it is today without them.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I interact daily with our community and do my best to add a bit of humour to those interactions.

Honestly, this mostly happens at the expense of our cats, because everyone loves laughing about the silly things their cats do!

I also find that being able to laugh at myself helps too.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Being a solo entrepreneur can be lonely. It can be really tempting to keep all your cards close to your chest, not because you want to but because you are busy working on a project.

However, I have found that by bringing people into the plans of Catexplorer has helped this so much. Some of these people are very active members of our community, and I have found that they have been amazing in helping grow Catexplorer.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
We recently launched the Catexplorer Podcast. Each episode we chat with a member of our community or an expert and they share their stories, tips and tricks and lessons learnt.

The idea for the podcast has been in the back of my mind for a very long time. However, I held back because I questioned whether it would interest anyone if anyone would want to listen to my voice and I didn’t know where to start.

However, the podcasting process has been one of the best parts of Catexplorer. Not only has it enabled me to connect to more members of our community, but it has also allowed me to involve them into the Catexplorer journey. And, people are listening to the podcast!

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Just start!

There are probably going to be things that you don’t know. But till you give it a go, you won’t have the opportunity to learn them.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
