Pop Quiz, Monday with Simon Chatfield

Simon Chatfield

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
Simon Chatfield

What is your job role?

Tell us about your company?
Unlike custom development and hefty enterprise software, OptimumHQ delivers powerful, tailored solutions in days or weeks, not months or years – at a much lower cost and with no custom code. We believe that custom software is critical to business success, but companies are getting ripped off by high-end software and custom dev shops. OptimumHQ is a disruptor in the SaaS industry, an emerging middle ground between off-the-shelf solutions that don’t serve the customer’s needs and monstrously expensive and clunky custom software.

What do you love most about your job?
We have a ton of fun at the office, which makes work feel less like work. One of our mottos is “If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.” One of my other favorite things is our ability to say “yes, we can do that” to our customers. I love solving our customers’ problems and making their jobs and lives so much easier by using OptimumHQ.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
My team and our customers. My employees are part of my family. We love what we do and enjoy coming to the office and spending time together.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My team inspires me every day through their hard work and out-of-the-box thinking. We always find a solution to our customers’ problems and a way to get things done.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
What do we NOT do to have fun at work is a better question. We have Nerf gun wars, in-office basketball tournaments, host a lot of potlucks, celebrate Cookie Wednesdays, go to our fair share of office happy hours, have dogs in the office regularly, and more. We definitely don’t take ourselves too seriously. We try to make every day interesting at the OptimumHQ office.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
OptimumHQ is creating a new category in the market, which leads to unique challenges. People aren’t searching for a solution they don’t yet know exists. Part of our 2019 marketing strategy is continuing to expand our brand recognition and get in front of potential customers who need our solution but don’t know about us yet. Because OptimumHQ is a new type of software, we also have to prove to potential customers we can do what we say we can. But once they experience the power of OptimumHQ, our clients are our biggest fans! As more people start to understand this type of software (a new space between off-the-shelf and completely custom-built) exists, it will create a huge disruption in the industry. We are prepared for the eventual shift and have a leg up on all future competition.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Always listen to the customer. I don’t believe that the customer is always right, but it’s important to listen to what they have to say. Feedback – whether positive or negative – is key to always improving your product and service.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Don’t give up. When starting a company or a new business venture, it’s all about persistence. If you know you have a great idea or product, don’t give up on it. Keep pushing.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
