The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Tell us about your company?
Emerging Insider Communications is a boutique public relations and marketing firm that is hyper-focused within the emerging media and technology fields. We work with innovators to garner worldwide press, media, awards, speakerships, and influencer exposure. We have launched unicorn startups, participated in internationally acclaimed exits and assisted some of the world’s most revolutionary brands and executives.
What do you love most about your job?
Every day we get to work with some of the most innovative organizations in the world. This means that we not only are challenged by the best but get to grow, learn and create with the best. It is equal parts inspiring and rewarding.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
A combination of internal and external factors. I am happiest when I am achieving and pursuing my goals, and so even on difficult days or times that are frustrating, I know the next win for me to hunt down is just around the corner. Chasing success with this mindset, keeps me moving, keeps me motivated and negates life’s challenges.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
There is no simple answer here as everyone is different. The task is always to realize that nearly everyone has some trait that merits inspiration and respect. The goal is to find it in each and learn from it.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
One way (of many) that we have found is to now and then head out as a team to do something exciting together. We’ve done anything from jet-skiing to indoor skydiving, white-water rafting to rock-climbing. Outside of being a great time, everyone learns to depend on each other and use adrenalin to blow off steam.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
We are a service agency which means dealing with an array of different personalities, work types, and styles across our clientele. There is no such thing as one size fits all and this means having to really strive to understand how to deal with some that are easy and some that are more difficult while custom tailoring our deliverables to each as well. This is often coupled with having to learn some incredibly complex areas of technology as well!
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
One that we encounter often is that our role is never to be “yes-men” if we don’t see eye-to-eye on our client’s project. That often the absolute best way to achieve a client’s goals and vision is to provide an educational process based on our own expertise that can help showcase a novel solution, angle or move forward.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
To do your homework every single day. Technology marketing means that every single year, month, week and even day, something new is happening, changing and evolving. To be effective in this position means keeping up and that involves an effort never to stop learning, researching or expanding your skill-set.
