The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Editor and Founder of The Life Style Edit
Tell us about your company?
TLSE is a platform that creates content for brands and for The Life Style Edit digital platform. We are all about beautiful imagery and creating a connection through content whilst telling a brands story.
What do you love most about your job?
I love that I get to wear lots of different hats on a day to day basis. No two days are the same, one day we could be shooting, another day creating mood boards, another day is a strategy. There are so many layers to our business that there is always something happening.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I love what I do. I spend more time at work than anywhere else, so it is so important that I love it. I am itching to get to work every single day. I jump out of bed early, exercise, swim, grab coffee and race to work, I don’t like to miss a minute of the day where I can be creating, working and getting shit done.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
There is a saying that ” You are only as good as the company you keep” and this covers how I feel about my team. They are all extraordinary people in their own right, super smart, sassy and overachievers. Without them I am nothing. They show up with as much gusto as me every day and give their whole selves to the job, and you can’t ask for more than that. I am the luckiest boss ever!
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
You have to have a sense of humour to work at TLSE and love Rose. Between the quiet, there is a barrage of laughter coming from the office, and we try to drink Rose every Friday as a reward for our massive working week. We travel a bit for shoots, so we often find ourselves away with each other for a few days or a week, this year we will be in Bali for 4 weeks shooting content for Brands, so it’s essential for us to take a moment to just be, talk crap and have a good laugh. Liking each other helps.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Time. There are never enough hours in the day for me to do what I want. I would love to have 20 extra staff members to help tick off all the boxes.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Working in a creative industry and working on shoots with lots of different people it is really important to establish good terms and conditions. In the beginning, we got caught out a few times by simply not laying down our terms. Now we have booking forms, terms and conditions, we have systems and processes. It’s important to create boundaries, so everyone is on the same page. It’s so much easier to deal with any issues if you have everything documented and signed by both parties.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Work hard. Same advice I would give to anyone in any industry. Put some skin in the game, and the magic happens when everyone else is sleeping.
