The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

DesignRush is a B2B Marketplace connecting clients with agencies.
What do you love most about your job?
I’m the boss…hahaha, no I’m just kidding. I actually do not appreciate that title ‘boss’ – it has a non-team feel about it. What I really enjoy about my job is that I get to work with creative people and bring a vision to life!
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Starting a company is stressful. Many things can and will go wrong. There are unforeseen challenges every day. But helps keep me on track is being organized, documenting our goals and tracking them – thereby seeing us get closer each week to get our company to where we envisioned it.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
We have a team vote methodology when it comes to deciding on features for our site. Our team members are expected to voice their opinion, and their thoughts count! When you give team members a voice, they’ll get you to see things from a new perspective – and that is both inspiring and critical for a company’s success.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I don’t like pranks – it can be distracting and can be taken the wrong way by the person on the receiving end.
I’m the oldest on our team – I’m in my 40’s – and like any entrepreneur building a brand, I spend every waking hour thinking about the company. But what I do encourage my team members to do is to go to the gym! It’s a good break, it breaks up their day and also improves both their physical and mental health.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
I can write a book about this. Everything from finding the right qualified person, to ensuring I’m doing a good job at hearing out team members and ensuring we have the right goals in place.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
At my last company, I ran an agency. I learned that it is much easier to find clients than it is to find good talent. So its more important to reward your talent (team members), as they will then do better work = happier clients.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Be prepared to deal with problems. They will be non-stop. Most you won’t see coming. Just know that dealing with problems is an important job of leadership. So don’t be discouraged by issues – learn to resolve them.
