The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Go Fish Digital was founded in 2005 and has been providing digital marketing services for a wide variety of B2B and B2C clients around the world for over a decade. Our services include Search Engine Optimization, Content Marketing, Influencer Marketing, Online Reputation Management, Website Design & Development, and Paid Advertising. Over the past few years, our achievements have been honored with a range of awards including US Search Awards, the Landys, the Drum Search Awards, and Indigo Design Awards. In 2018, we were named an Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Company.
What do you love most about your job?
I love that my job is challenging and always changing. No two days are the same which means the days never become monotonous. I also love that influencer marketing is a growing industry and that there are constantly new things to learn.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I work with a team of very talented individuals. Being surrounded by creative, smart minds makes me want to try even harder than I would on my own. I love that we’re challenged to be rockstars but that we’re also left to our own devices. Not to mention that I really enjoy talking to and spending time with my colleagues. In short, I’m motivated by the people I work with.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-workers have been featured speakers at major industry conferences including PubCon and SMX. They are contributors to popular publications including Moz and Search Engine Land. They’re often quoted as industry experts. Clearly, they’re a talented bunch of people. With all of that being said, no one has gotten a big head from their individual accomplishments. Everyone I work with is open to collaboration and is willing to accept feedback on their work. That, to me, says a lot. I’m inspired not only by my co-workers’ accomplishments but also by their teamwork.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We have really fantastic off-site events. Some of my personal favorites have included a trip to the Outer Banks, a pop-up dinner in a butterfly house, and a magician performance inside a science museum. In addition to those planned events, we’re frequently doing happy hours after work and are often surprised with crafts or special themed days.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
In my role, I play the go-between for several different parties. It can be challenging to have so many individuals continually vying for your attention or help. I have hundreds of influencers who I am in contact with on a regular basis, clients whom I need to maintain open communication with, and my team at Go Fish Digital that needs to be kept in the loop. This means that I am getting a LOT of emails and messages at all hours of the day, especially because many of these people live across the globe in different time zones. Having to keep up with all of the messages while also staying on top of my work is one of the biggest challenges.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
When working with multiple parties, always clearly set expectations up front. This is an essential aspect of working with influencers. Typically, an influencer has worked with (or is currently working with) many different brands, all of which have different rules or expectations. So as to avoid any trouble down the line, you should always have everything from timeline and deliverables to communication and reporting expectations clearly laid out from the start.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
You need to be very meticulous and organized if you want to be in the influencer marketing field. You’ll likely be running multiple campaigns at once with many different influencers. This is especially true of those on the agency side of things. Keep a record of everything or else you’ll begin to lose certain pieces. When the time comes to report on your campaigns, you’ll find the detailed notes to be very helpful.
