Pop Quiz, Monday with Bridgett McGowen

Bridgett McGowen

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
I am an awarded international professional speaker and a presentation skills coach.

Tell us about your company?
BMcTALKS is a premier public speaking coaching firm that provides, in one place, everything busy professional women need to speak with clarity, sound confident, and deliver stunning presentations with maximum impact without any of the stress or anxiety.

What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about being a professional speaker and presentation skills coach is I get to help businesswomen get the tools and skills they need to master their messages so that they can turn their voices into powerhouses, inspire millions, and build serious skillsets and mindsets that will lead to more and more opportunities.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Only about 10% of the population loves engaging in public speaking. Another 10% are genuinely terrified of having to engage in public speaking and can have physical reactions to getting on the microphone, and the remaining roughly 80% get butterflies, are anxious, and get very little sleep the night before a presentation. What motivates me to get up every day and go to work is there are a lot of people out there who need my help!

How do your co-workers inspire you?
As a solopreneur, I do not have traditional co-workers, but I have an incredible network of fellow solopreneurs. They inspire me because we collectively celebrate all our triumphs and routinely examine and learn from each of our trials. It’s like having an ecosystem of continuous support and knowledge that motivates me to do more than I ever thought I could do.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I love to laugh, and what’s better than laughing myself is making others laugh! It is not out of the ordinary for me to inject a quip during a meeting, a coaching session, or a presentation (usually at my expense!) that has people nearly in stitches and clutching their sides. And as quickly as the witticism appears, it’s gone again, and I’m back to business, which makes the moment even funnier!

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
The two most valuable lessons I have learned from past projects are 1. never let them see you sweat, and 2. always make everyone feel incredibly valuable. No matter what goes wrong, what is out of place, what does not come together, never give the impression of anything being amiss. Never let them see you sweat no matter the circumstances. And when you put others in the spotlight and make them shine, then you are the one who ends up shining.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Advice for professional speakers who are new to the industry and even businesswomen and men who do not have aspirations of speaking professionally but who speak or make presentations as a part of their jobs is to find your passion. Find what ignites a spark in you, what drives you to make the lives of others better; speak from the heart, and speak as often as possible.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
