The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

What is your job role?

Tell us about your company?

What do you love most about your job?
I love waking up in the mornings knowing we can really help people get a better deal, and reduce peoples confusion about specific products. As an entrepreneur, I also love knowing that whatever decisions I make today I will have to stand by, it’s very empowering working for yourself.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Before I had my own company, I would really struggle waking up to go into a repetitive sales job, with a heartless boss that was destroying my soul. I only lasted three weeks doing that, but the memory stays with me, and it’s not a situation I ever want to get into again (working for somebody else). If you really feel strongly about working for yourself, even if you fail at something you have the motivation to immediately get back up and have another go.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
It’s always great to see people with so much focus and get-up that when you are having a bad day, they can pull you through with energy alone.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Our team is remote, so it’s more of a challenge, but I always ensure the tone of our message is appropriate, friendly and personal.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge by far is finding the right people, and then retaining them. The biggest mistake I see other entrepreneurs make is taking staff for granted, and not investing enough time and resources into keeping people happy, and empowered or letting politics run rife.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
If you are going to promote your website using SEO, don’t take any shortcuts. Anything that is advertised as a guaranteed SEO service or has a cost per link run! Spend the time to build a list of real people and create real relationships for the win.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Finding something that works is tough (be it a marketing channel, a recruitment strategy), for every five things you try maybe one will work as or better than expected. When do you do find those things that work, double down and invest heavily in scaling.
