The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

What is your job role?

Tell us about your company?
The EGC Group is a digital-centric, full-service marketing agency working with companies in healthcare, craft beverage, consumer products, education, and retail. We were founded in 1985, and our mission is to do great work to grow our clients’ business. We have gravitas, but we act like a start-up, evolving and growing every day.

What do you love most about your job?
Watching our clients’ businesses grow as a direct result of our marketing expertise, and seeing our smart employees work to make that happen! We have had several clients for almost 20 years, which is unheard of in this business; it is incredibly satisfying.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I love the energy. The coffee and bagels are great, but our staff and vibe are even better. It is an exciting business, and our agency works hard to convey that excitement every day.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-workers are always willing to educate me on new media companies, social networks, algorithms, strategies, etc. Sometimes I can’t even pronounce the new phrases I learn!

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Our philosophy is “work hard, play hard.” We have craft beer parties, picnics, and barbecues, a holiday office decorating contest, happy hours, “bring your dogs to work” day, homemade chili lunches…there is always something fun going on (usually food and beverages are involved!). There is no better way to encourage employee bonding than having fun together.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Keeping up with the changes in our industry and staying profitable. The marketing industry is nothing like what it was when I first started, or even a few years ago, so it is critical to stay current and embrace change.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Never make assumptions. We did work for a college without conducting enough research on the student body. After the fact, we discovered that many students were not attending sporting events, nor did they care about their teams’ progress. The basis of our campaign was the school mascot. Ouch!

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Differentiate yourself from the masses. Do and sell something no one else is offering and ensure you can make money doing it.
