Pop Quiz, Monday with Sarah Jones

Sarah Jones

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
Director, Sarah-J Coaching

Tell us about your company?
Run Sarah-J Coaching, and I help people find the ‘NEXT’ in their career. Life is a series of chapters, and changes and our ability to regroup, reboot and reinvent is vital. I coach leaders on how to reinvent their business or leadership style, confidence, impact, and visibility plus individuals who need to take a look at their careers and reinvent what they do.

What do you love most about your job?
I love seeing the light-bulb moments my clients have when I work through a technique or exercise, and the feedback I get. One client on Friday phoned to tell me how much positive feedback she is getting at work due to her increased confidence and shift in a personal image – it was like the weight had dropped from her shoulders, her energy was incredible, and I love that I help people make these breakthroughs.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
My natural joie de vivre, each day is different and an adventure, life is for a living. My parents struggled for years, and I grew up in dire economic times, and I always have, because of this experience, had the drive to make the best of each day. We only get back what we put in!

How do your co-workers inspire you?
I don’t have colleagues as much but suppliers, JV partners, and clients. I love learning from others, working with people with integrity who are also willing to show up in life, make a difference and evolve. A flexible mindset I guess that is geared for growth. And those that have overcome the odds as I have but remain not defeated always inspire me.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I am a glass half full person – sure there are busy times and pinch points, but I enjoy what I do so it’s not too hard. I’m naturally outgoing. I know that self-development can be challenging (what I help people with), but I try and convey an attitude of ‘hey look this is fun let’s enjoy this wonderful journey.’

What are some of the challenges of your job?
I think as a business owner juggling the work I do with looking after the sales and marketing side.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Yes – trust your gut. And if someone isn’t really delivering, or showing up – challenge them. Break down projects into bite-size chunks and work to a plan, so you are all on the same page.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Be clear on your ideal client, your purpose. Is this what you really want to do? – does it make your heart sing as this will help you through the challenging times.
