Pop Quiz, Monday with Henry Chow
The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
I am the Managing Director of Motionwave Technologies Pty Ltd
Tell us about your company?
Motionwave is a one-stop-shop IT solution for businesses. We aim to provide a dedicated IT department for small and medium businesses that they can rely on for all their technology needs such as purchasing computer hardware, technology strategy, IT security, Business website development, IT policies, business continuity, and business process automation. We want to be a single point of contact for business owners so they can focus on running their business not on fixing their technology issues.
What do you love most about your job?
I love listening to people’s issues with their businesses and then addressing them with technology. It feels good when you can make people life much more easier with technology solutions.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Family, staff, and customers are my primary motivation to get up every day. You do not always have solutions to all problems, but I can at least point people in the right direction by referring them to other people in my circle.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
Their positive attitudes and commitments at work inspire me to work harder. We work as a team, and there is no way I can run this company without my co-workers.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We have team building lunch and beer o’clock on a regular basis. This will give me an opportunity to get some feedback about my co-workers’ week.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
The nature of technology is one of the challenges of my job. It changes rapidly, so I always have to keep up with the latest technology. Human resource is another challenge. I need to motivate all our staff to keep them interested in their roles.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Dynamic is the right word to describe IT. Things need to be updated on the fly due to the nature of technology and business. Customer requirements gathering is the most critical phase in any IT projects. My advice is to spend a bit more time in ensuring that your team fully understand your customers’ requirements before starting any projects. Your project will be completed faster when you have a clear understanding of what your customers need.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
My advice is to have clear procedures and processes in your business. IT People tend to forget things when you do not have processes that they can follow. The most significant cost for the IT industry is to fix problems caused by incomplete tasks.
