Pop Quiz, Monday with Anu Ramani
The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Isoline Communications is a content marketing company focused on helping clients tell great stories to improve sales, audience engagement and thought leadership. Our clients – mainly in the technology, telecoms, wireless and B2B sectors – are rewriting technology today and rewiring tomorrow. We are three years old now, based in London and enjoying our exciting growth journey.
What do you love most about your job?
Understanding technologies that will reshape our world completely in just a few years, and then passing on this insight and understand in accessible and engaging ways.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
The fact that I’m building something for the future.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
They bring fresh ideas and a fresh perspective to everything. I enjoy the push and pull of idea exchange and the camaraderie and supportive environment.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We are a dog-friendly office! So that’s a great stress reliever and fun-generator in itself. The other day we played balloon volleyball with the dog, and that was absolutely brilliant until the balloon popped when it all went a little bit wrong. We sometimes watch Netflix at lunchtime – I’m hooked on Marie Kondo’s tidying up show at the moment, but nobody else agrees with me.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Finding talented, motivated and sharp young people to join the team is an ongoing challenge. I personally find the admin and bookkeeping a real chore but I know it has to be done, so I keep at it.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Don’t be afraid to reach out for new aspects of the business. We’re sometimes too constrained by our own inhibitions and hesitate to reach out and grasp new opportunities. But my advice is just to try anyway, we can surprise ourselves by how much we are capable of sometimes. The default answer should always be ‘yes.’
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
The content marketing industry is still nascent, especially when it comes to B2B. The rules are just being set and redefined. So be hungry for new knowledge and skills. Read extensively about the industry, upskill constantly, and try out new techniques and skills in your day-to-day projects.
