Pop Quiz, Monday with Elaine Abery

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
I help people overcome hurdles – in their businesses, charities or personal lives.

Tell us about your company?
My company offers charities, businesses and individuals best practice, award-winning policy advice.

What do you love most about your job?
Most people come to me very frustrated by bureaucratic actions and/or legislation that just doesn’t make sense.

I love it when they say “thank you so much. I was feeling overwhelmed, but now I feel optimistic.”

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I love helping people and empowering them to be their best.

By removing administrative headaches, I can free them up – time-wise and emotional energy-wise – to do what they do best.

I love the sparkling motivation in their eyes as they leave our initial meeting.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
In a previous role, I was given a staff member to fire.

I sat them down and found out what they were doing and, more importantly, what they wanted to do. Together, we worked on giving them the skills to do what motivated them.

Words cannot express how inspired I was once this staff member became one of our team’s highest performers.

That inspires me – helping people become their best.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I’m always laughing. I have a reputation for making anything fun.

Personally, I think it’s because I ride a bike to work and that energises me. When you arrive to work happy, smiling and full of energy, it’s catching!

I love hearing comments like “I enjoy my work so much more since you arrived.”

I was even put in charge of raising morale for four offices of an unhappy large government department.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
I get quite upset at some of the injustices that happen, especially to pensioners.

However, I need to make sure I’m not emotionally-charged when I talk to bureaucrats.

That particularly applies when dealing with overseas call centres of large companies.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Check facts. Double check facts.

When people are emotionally drained and emotionally involved in complex situations, their recollections might not always be 100% correct.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Spend your time on quality interactions, rather than quantity. Everyone wants to feel cared about.
