Pop Quiz, Monday with Scott Nailon

I love that I give people a quality product and that it can sometimes give great results within one month of site launch.

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
Project Manager & SEO Consultant

Tell us about your company?
Sites By Design uses a simple yet powerful 5 step framework to build a website which is preplanned for search engine success.

What do you love most about your job?
I love that I give people a quality product and that it can sometimes give great results within one month of site launch.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I enjoy what I do. I love the happy look on the faces of my clients when they tell me that they have a stream of sales leads coming into their email all week every week. I have not had employment in many years. I get to run my own business and work when I am happy to work. I also get to spend reasonable amounts of time with my wife and children – family is important to me.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
The people I get to work alongside inspire me because I only work with people who are better than me in their chosen field. I am continually learning new things that I can use to make the lived and online marketing of my client’s websites better.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
The fun I would have at work is more in the meetings with clients. I enjoy lunches and coffee dates whilst we talk about work, family and other topics of interest.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The challenges of my job are ensuring we heard the client right and got the job done well. Being able to translate a client needs to content writers, designers and developers can be a challenge if a quality brief isn’t created first.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I have learnt in the web design industry is this: To build a quality website you need to plan it carefully, write good content, once the content is finished (or gathered) – including images – then you look at the design. Once the design is signed off by the client 100%, then it goes to the development team. Too many people these days grab a site builder and build a site hoping the client will love it. Many of the site builders are also SEO killers.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Get into an established agency and learn how it works. Running your own business building websites alone won’t give you success – it will become a headache, and you will end up leaving the industry. You need recurring revenue from other things like Hosting, SEO and Adwords to survive this industry.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
