Pop Quiz, Monday with Kathy Fray
The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Best-selling Author, semi-retired Midwife & International private Maternity Consultant
Tell us about your company?
Kathy Fray’s MOTHERWISE.
We provide an enormous array of free and purchasable resources for mamas-to-be. With myself, Kathy, having had a No1 best-selling book on birth-babies-motherhood since 2005, we have over time developed an enormous array of resources for expectant mothers.
What do you love most about your job?
Most women in the Western world, have about a 1/3 to 2/3 chance of experiencing a dramatic, traumatic Emergency C-Section delivery whereas 85% of my private clients’ labors result in a vaginal birth.
The reason is simple: Advance Prenatal Education.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
The first words on my website Home page answer this:
“HAVE THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY EXTRAORDINARY BIRTH EXPERIENCE YOU CAN IMAGINE:
I get up every morning to teach Mothers-to-Be across the world some of the most comprehensive childbirth education possible, so they and their Baby and their Partner, get the absolute best and most enjoyable start to their new Family’s life.”
How do your co-workers inspire you?
By their dedication to the Company Vision.
A wonderful, caring bunch of people!
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We all work remotely from each other, so our fun is mostly laughing online at our weekly Huddles.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
By far, having first-time parents-to-be prioritize enough to invest in advanced antenatal education. That for sure is the No.1 challenge.
Later in life, they will invest in their child’s private math tutor or private dance tutor or private school even. They have also oftentimes already invested previously in a private gym instructor and maybe a private business mentor or private life-coach.
But with the BIGGEST event in a Woman’s Life (becoming a Mother) somehow more first-time parents make the decision that average routine freebie/cheap Prenatal Education is completely adequate (which in my obviously strongly-bias opinion, it is completely inadequate).
That is why, I also oftentimes look after, for the first time, women become second-time Mothers, who say things like “My last birth experience was horrific. I felt completely dis-empowered. The whole thing was taken over. I realized afterward I really hadn’t engaged fully into enough quality prenatal education. I am NOT experiencing that horror-story again. This time I’m taking charge and taking ownership.”
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
I guess my biggest lesson (learned years ago) is always to be Mentored myself – to realise investing in my own Education is the best thing I can do for my Business. And in my case, that has meant investing in education about Social Media marketing which has been (still is) a big Learning Curve.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
There are very few private Maternity Consultants like me around – but a lot of Childbirth Educators.
I would say that it is critical to get in-the-trenches Childbirth experience, before teaching childbirth education.
As a midwife, I have caught hundreds and hundreds of babies, with nearly half of them in basic Birth Centres or HomeBirths.
If you genuinely want to be an expert in something (in my case, teaching the secrets of natural labor resulting in normal birth), it’s about walking-the-walk before talking-the-talk.
Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
