The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Tell us about your company?
I work full-time for the State Fair of Texas as Director of Community Affairs, but I have my own business, Soulstice Consultancy. I provide strategic planning for nonprofit organizations in addition to other services. I am also the author of two books and finishing a third.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the ability to make a difference in the lives of individuals and organizations through consultations, training or my books.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
I am motivated to be a part of making a difference. Every day, I meet with some of the most amazing people to share my expertise and experience. I also learn so much from them, and I am grateful.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-workers are wonderful. I am around some of the most brilliant and talented individuals that daily bring their A-game to the job.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
My boss at the State Fair of Texas is very intentional in making sure that we have opportunities for celebration and team building. I am also very deliberate in doing things for my staff to recognize them and show my appreciation.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Each of the positions I listed has various challenges. As Director of Community Affairs, I deal with understanding the dynamics of dealing with different interests. As an author, it is building an audience, and as a consultant, the list of challenges can run the gamut!
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
I convened a group of community leaders, and I learned so much from these meetings. I realized that it is imperative to listen. As much as we believe we have the answers because of our experiences, we have blind spots that can challenge our view. Adaptive leadership principles are critical. It is essential to know when you should view an issue from the balcony or the dance floor according to Heifetz. The experience was confirmation.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Find mentors who are in the spaces that you’d like to be in. Be open to opportunities that will stretch you.
