Pop Quiz, Monday with Nick & James Ferrone

Diamond Freight is a family owned intermodal trucking company built over 30 years ago. We are focused on handling intermodal/ocean containers in and out of New York, New Jersey, & Pennsylvania.

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
As the owners, we split our functions into two silos. Nick oversees operations ensuring maximum efficiency, productivity, and profitability of the drivers. James leads safety, an important role that provides oversight into industry standards of driver health and safety and well as preventive truck care and maintenance.

Tell us about your company?
Diamond Freight is a family owned intermodal trucking company built over 30 years ago. We are focused on handling intermodal/ocean containers in and out of New York, New Jersey, & Pennsylvania.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the challenge of coming in every day and trying to figure out how I’m going to make the most efficient use of my drivers for our customers – it’s like a puzzle that needs to be put back together each morning. I also love that our company and industry is always evolving, so there are still new challenges to navigate or opportunities that pop up to be found.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
We love the challenge of working in a complex industry like trucking and continually looking for ways to improve, expand or elevate our company.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-workers come from all walks of life. Some are single mothers with young children learning a new career, others have been in the industry for years, some are the first generation in their family living and working in the USA, but all of them come to work with energy & focus to get the job done for our customers and drivers.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Annually, we host a big Christmas party at our employee’s favorite restaurant. It’s always a big hit. We also give out gift cards to all of our employees and drivers to say thank you for their hard work. Daily, I also like to make it a point to get up and walk around. Ask how their day is going, what are their weekend plans, etc. Just get to know everyone and little about their passions outside of the office.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge of our job is making sure our moves are as efficient as possible to provide the best prices for our customers. Additionally, balancing federal regulations that are applied to all drivers and trucks to ensure safety is at the forefront of all of our decisions.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
As we’ve designed new logistics systems, ensuring proper training and new operating procedures are created during implementation is critical to the success of any new system or tool.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Intermodal trucking is a fun and exciting industry with lots of opportunities for someone with little experience to grow and create a career. To work in this industry, you need to be flexible to regularly change environments and have the ability to work well on small teams.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
