Pop Quiz, Monday with Dr. Jonathan King

I love that through my job if properly executed, can change a sector by improving the mental health of all Australians and hopefully soon, people worldwide.

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Tell us about your company?
Lysn is a leading mental health solution that empowers people to be control of their own mental health. Lysn offers enhanced access to some of the world’s prominent psychologists who are available around the clock for online and phone psychology services, along with information and education on everything mental health and well-being related. Our fast growth is helping remove the stigma of mental health support and education while improving the industry’s continuity of care problem all around the world.

What do you love most about your job?
I love that through my job if properly executed, can change a sector by improving the mental health of all Australians and hopefully soon, people worldwide. It excites me to know that as we grow and expand it means that we are helping improve mental health support with industry-leading innovation.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Beyond being able to contribute to improving the mental healthcare system, I’m motivated by wanting to make a positive social change. As a startup founder, my days are usually full of meetings, business development, and administration to do lists, but regardless the task, it is always a comfort and motivating as this work is to achieve a long-term goal. I’m also driven by the people that I work with and the people that I meet along the way – so many people are doing some fantastic things in this industry, it’s exciting to be able to collaborate with them and work together to improve the mental healthcare system.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-workers each have many inspiring qualities, but the thing that inspires me most is their attitude and drive. They all have unwavering work ethics and when we have long days working they’re still able to push to achieve results all whilst keeping a smile on their faces.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I wouldn’t say we have pranks at work. But our team building and culture is a big focus for us. Many of our team is spread across Australia, and it can be challenging to build a conducive and supportive environment when some staff work alone in different states. We do have a wins and losses team chat where we all contribute to so that the team can all celebrate the big wins and help each other with difficult tasks. Another thing we promote is a wellness and fitness challenge, where we message each other when we workout, eat healthily or do something mindful. It was initially very slow to take off, but now our whole team is participating in it daily, and it seems the developers have engaged the most post work with this and have started challenging the team in runs, and bike rides. It has been great for team chemistry.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome is understanding that it’s important to stick to your strengths and employ experts around you that can fill the gaps. We can’t all be experts in everything, so it’s essential to build a great team around you and trust in them to do to support you.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
A great lesson is that you have to be extremely passionate about your cause and the business you’re building. Otherwise, you can quickly lose motivation. I feel fortunate that my company is what drives me every day.

It is also imperative to build a good team around you and put value in them – they are the backbone of our business, and through their support, we will continue to achieve great things. So don’t rush to hire a team, take your time and choose wisely.

Persistence and resilience are two other great lessons – sometimes it’s far more important to take your time to build the right networks and land big contracts.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Be willing to put in a lot of hard work, sometimes without any recognition. Learn to be agile and not dwell on perfection – no business is perfect. Focus small, but think big (you have to have a big dream/Idea, but focus on tight small executions of goals, to achieve the bigger picture). Don’t have an ego. Be transparent about your mistakes and fix them before they happen again or further worsen the business. And finally, surround yourself with people who are as passionate and driven as you are. You can have an average idea with a great team and be successful, or a great idea with a bad team and poor execution, and most times that won’t work out.
