Pop Quiz, Monday with Jason Berkowitz

Oddly enough, I love analyzing data and reverse engineering. When taking a look at a website’s organic SEO growth, it allows you to discover metrics that rarely get discussed.

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Tell us about your company?
My agency, Break The Web, focuses on Inbound Marketing, bringing our clients new awareness and positioning online. For almost ten years, we’ve been consistently testing and optimizing campaigns for improved success.

What do you love most about your job?
Oddly enough, I love analyzing data and reverse engineering. When taking a look at a website’s organic SEO growth, it allows you to discover metrics that rarely get discussed. Then, when you’re able to test that strategy for yourself and the end result is increased search engine positions, that’s the most fun.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
The end result of something (business, health, etc.) not working out as planned or failing to grow in the aforementioned areas.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Every week, we encourage our team to share something awesome they’ve recently discovered. It could be business/marketing related; it could be health or personal growth related; no specific guidelines but when an individual shares something new that has a carry-over into everyday life, listening to their experience and trying it for ourselves is truly amazing.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Since we’re a virtual agency with no specific headquarters, I will admit, having the ideal company culture is a challenge. We aim to water-cooler talk using specific Slack channels where people can share funny things they’ve seen online, but the upcoming book club will be fun.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Search Engine Optimization definitely carries a reputation; one that is created by agencies or specialists that deliver less than positive experiences.

Not only trying to provide new clients with much different agency experience but also re-educating them on the proper execution of SEO that will help them grow can eat up a lot of time.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Don’t work with Startups unless they have a fully mapped business model and/or seed funding. Early on, we’ve made the mistake of working with Startups, only for the entrepreneur to mismanage their business/money and 4-5 months of work go down the drain (especially when we bring in niche-specific specialists).

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Don’t fall for shiny objects. There’s a lot of money in marketing education and “gurus” can be excellent salesmen.

Find a resource/mentor/education platform that can not only show you proof of successes but isn’t something that could be considered too good to be true.
