The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
As managing director, my role at OPEN Media is to make sure the culture and work environment is the best it can be for the team.

OPEN is currently working towards gaining a national footprint, so I also look at new development opportunities that could potentially contribute to our growing portfolio.

Tell us about your company?
OPEN Media is an out of home media owner based in Liverpool, UK. OPEN specialises in premium advertising sites across the UK.

2018 has seen us expand out of Liverpool and into Manchester and London, with two screens on the side of Hotel Football next to Old Trafford and a screen on the new Boxpark Wembley.

What do you love most about your job?
Giving my team members the best opportunities available is what brings me the most satisfaction at work. At OPEN Media we help our employees to grow within themselves, whether that be with regular 1 on 1 meeting, team activities or additional training.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Having clear goals keeps me motivated every day to do the best work I can do. I find that it helps to have a clear purpose and understanding of why I do what I do – it really is an exciting time for OPEN Media.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
My co-worker’s ability to think outside the box inspires me daily. It is important to me that everyone that works for the company is aligned with the same vision and values, and I’m lucky to have a team made up of people that are passionate and driven.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We make sure to inject as much fun as possible into the work environment. Our office is in a co-working space, which means it’s easy for us to regularly eat lunch together and play the odd game of ping pong. We also socialise outside of work as often as we can, as it’s important for the team to spend time together in a relaxed environment.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
I would say that recruitment is the biggest challenge for me. People are the most important part of any business – it doesn’t matter how good your products or services are if you haven’t got the right people you’re going to struggle.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
When I first set up the business, I was trying to get a lot done by myself which was a struggle. I learned that you couldn’t do everything on your own as much as you try and bringing in people to help share the workload is essential if you want everything to run smoothly.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Asking questions and being open to meeting new people has got me to where I am today, so my most valuable piece of advice would be that relationships are key in any industry.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
