Pop Quiz, Monday with Will Brooke

In this case, I don’t think it’s corny to say ‘work is fun’ – we play around with new fontmoji concepts every day and sending initial concepts around is really fun.

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
Founder, CEO

Tell us about your company?
Fontmoji is a custom sticker app that uses new font technology to allow users to send entertaining messages (fontmojis). Adobe & Mozilla created this new type of font technology – we’re excited to bring it into the Messaging space.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the creativity. In the course of starting this venture, we’ve learned how to create fonts ourselves, and have collaborated with over a dozen super talented typographers and illustrators.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
When you’re confident that you’re really onto something, you’re paranoid you’re never moving fast enough! But also knowing we can always push the product further, and more it even more fun and enjoyable for users (and ourselves!).

How do your co-workers inspire you?
It’s been very inspiring seem them learn and master things out of their wheelhouse, let alone find out about some of their hidden skills!

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
In this case, I don’t think it’s corny to say ‘work is fun’ – we play around with new fontmoji concepts every day and sending initial concepts around is really fun.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Challenges range from keeping the product in scope for v1.0, v2.0, etc. and ensuring you’re keeping a balance between user feedback & the team’s own trusted vision for the company. If you speak to enough users you could build five different apps or 5 apps in one – and parsing the right features for the right stage of the product takes discipline and contemplation.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Do your market research! Someone may have done an aspect of what you’re doing whether on a different platform, for a different audience, to solve a different problem, etc.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
