The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

What is your job role?

Tell us about your company?
Fantastic Services is the one-stop shop for all your home and garden needs. We offer 25+ home, office and garden services, delivered by more than 1500 professionals in the UK and over 350 professionals in Australia.
The Fantastic Services Family started its journey back in 2009. It all began with a chance meeting between my business partner Anton Skarlatov and me. Back then, I needed a cleaner and Anton was running a cleaning business. We got to talking and very quickly realised that we shared a vision of revolutionising the industry by delivering home services in a much better – a fantastic way, by working together.
And now, nine years later, we are a recognisable brand offering top quality services.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the challenge it brings. I remember in the beginning it was just me and Anton, two laptops and a shared mobile phone. We had to fight some unfair competitors – slashing our van tires, cutting our phone lines and all that convinced us even more that we were on the right track – delivering top quality services.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Making people’s lives easier. This actually is the core of our company philosophy – the 360 Degree Happiness. Making sure the services we deliver to make our clients, pros and staff happy and their lives a touch easier is what gets me up in the morning.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Hearing their ideas on how to improve what we offer. Seeing their faces when their ideas are put into practice. Knowing they have accepted the company as their family and are always looking for ways for it to grow. These might seem like small things, but to me, they mean the world.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We have amazing team buildings and not just within one team or one department but between them too. We have had Master Chef, Survivor, Robin Hood, Hunger Games themed games where people along with having fun were able to get to know their colleagues outside the office.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Running a business with offices on three continents means communication can often be a challenge. There were days where I had to be up from 4 AM till midnight with meetings back-to-back, discussing everything from day-to-day operations to growth plans and strategies. Luckily, with time, I learnt to delegate and now only attend a few meetings – the strategy related ones.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Growing too fast is indeed possible. It happened to us. And if one is not prepared, it can have a serious negative impact on the whole company. It happened to us a few years back. What we did then was to relocate project managers from one project to another, drop projects mid-done and all this led to an overall drop in our effectiveness. We did learn from this experience and are now doing things differently, with more precision and better planning.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Listen to your clients, listen to your partners, listen to your employees. This will help you stand out from the others in the field and will help you on your path to growth.
