Pop Quiz, Monday with Matt Riley

We have a fantastic team of talented and dedicated people at TONIC. Their dedication to their work and commitment to the ideal that is TONIC inspires me.

Matt Riley

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
Matt Riley

What is your job role?
Managing Director of TONIC Design Pty Ltd (Architecture and Interiors) Owner / Director TONIC Hospitality Pty Ltd (Café and Small Bar and Function Venue) Owner of new startup 2019 – TONIC . LOCO – a Local collaborative coworking space for creatives

Tell us about your company?
TONIC Design is a full-service architecture and interior design studio whose experience and capacity spans many industries. The fundamental values of our studio start with client service. Our focus is on architectural outcomes that enrich the built environment through careful budgeting and design, whilst incorporating a holistic project approach through our interior design services.

We’ve been doing this a long time and still relish the opportunity to master new techniques. We operate our studio with an understanding that architecture and interior design moves beyond just client service and delivery of a project. We believe that by giving our clients the opportunity to have a hands-on approach during all phases of the project, we can leverage a unique perspective that activates our own expertise and adds another layer of refinement to your project.

What do you love most about your job?
It’s all about the people. Realising a space or building and then watching peoples’ emotions and reactions when they inhabit that space is the best thing about being an Architect and Designer.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Being able to hand on heart deliver a project for great clients that have exceeded their expectations, that inspires others, and that has been delivered most sustainably and collaboratively.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
We have a fantastic team of talented and dedicated people at TONIC. Their dedication to their work and commitment to the ideal that is TONIC inspires me.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Birthdays are a great time to celebrate together with cake and coffee. There have been many friendly but cheeky pranks over the years, mainly when someone is away on leave, we like to welcome them back with a little bit of fun.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Apart from a few late nights here and there, in the Design world, you are only as good as your last few projects so ensuring that projects are continually improving even just slightly is important to keep the work current, fresh and exciting. This can sometimes be a challenge only subdued by a glass of red wine and hand sketching things out.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Client relationships and communication are the keys to success. Without effective communication you have nothing.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Find a mentor who inspires you, try to meet with them regularly, learn from them, then strike your own path learning from your mistakes and your success.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
