Pop Quiz, Monday with Maddison Selleck

Endeavour to learn something new every single day. This isn’t always going to be possible; we all get caught up in the daily grind sometimes, but it’s important that you spend time improving yourself and upskilling as often as possible…

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
I’m the Chief Business Development Officer, which is a really fancy way of saying that I oversee the sales, marketing, and customer experience efforts at VentraIP Australia, Zuver, and Synergy Wholesale.

Tell us about your company?
VentraIP Australia is one of the largest providers of domain names, web hosting, and online solutions in Australia.

With almost 50 employees working out of our office in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, we’re 100% Australian and have spent the past decade helping more than 175,000 local businesses succeed online.

What do you love most about your job?
I’m quite passionate about all things related to customers and particularly enjoy exploring new ways to help improve the customer journey with VentraIP Australia.

I love that my role empowers me to help potential customers find a company that cares about them and gives me the freedom to create a solution that will see them succeed online.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Knowing that I’m helping people get their business online and providing them with the tools they need to succeed is all the motivation I need.

…It also helps that we have a dedicated chef and in-house barista, too!

How do your co-workers inspire you?
Every employee at VentraIP Australia is so passionate about helping people and really seem to care about the wellbeing of our customers.

VentraIP Australia’s founders, Cheyne Jonstone and Angelo Guiffrida, really have created an amazing workplace that’s full of inspiring individuals who have helped build VentraIP Australia into an amazing company.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
We’re all about having fun in the workplace and creating a uniquely rewarding environment.

From weekly Friday night drinks and games in the office to monthly departmental outings that focus on team building (escape rooms, etc.), there’s never a dull moment here in the office!

Some of the office pieces include:

  • VR Setup
  • Air Hockey
  • Arcade Machine
  • Company Gym
  • Full HD 85″ Theatre
  • Heaps more!

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Balancing business priorities and working with teams that are made up of individuals who have completely different wants and needs is by far one of the biggest challenges associated with my role at VentraIP Australia.

There’s always going to be an endless list of tasks you need to get done yesterday, and that’s all a part of the fun!

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
When working on long-term projects, don’t just assume the work is getting done and that everybody is pulling their weight.

It’s exceptionally easy for deadlines to be missed and for projects to drag on for far too long if you’re not managing your teams closely.

VentraIP Australia now runs an Agile Scrum framework across every department and encourage daily standups in every team. We’ve found this to be an exceptionally useful exercise and are seeing far greater output across-the-board.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Endeavour to learn something new every single day. This isn’t always going to be possible; we all get caught up in the daily grind sometimes, but it’s important that you spend time improving yourself and upskilling as often as possible…

After all, the digital world is rapidly changing, and you don’t want to be left behind!

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:

Hal Elrod is a genius and his book The Miracle Morning has been magical in my life. What Hal has done is taken the best practices, developed over centuries of human consciousness development, and condensed the ‘best of the best’ into a daily morning ritual. A ritual that is now part of my day.”
