The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Kolossus Digital is an innovative IT services provider specialising in consulting, development, and management of technical solutions.
Kolossus Digital has developed some really innovative technical solutions across verticals including manufacturing, medical, training, retail, legal and HR. These solutions have helped overcome the digital laggard with case studies such as Absorb Environmental Solutions that implemented improved internal inefficiencies by 280 percent, resulted in $120,000 reduction in administration costs and 32 percent reduction in data errors by avoiding manual entry of orders and an integrated online/offline offsite iPad solution.
Other solid tangibles include optimisations of the enrolment process for Australian Unmanned Systems Academy, increasing enrolments by 100% – a value of $1,680,000.
A bespoke communication and administration platform for Home Doctors saw practices grow their onsite doctor count by 600%. Before this solution, AHDN could only visit 40 patients/month due to their high administration costs and restricted their doctor count to just six per shift. AHDN now visit around 260 patients per month with an average headcount of 13 doctors per shift.
The Prediktr-R recruiting tool developed clever Smartlisting that helped with a 40% reduction in the duration of the traditional recruitment process.
Working across AWS, and using open source technology, Kolossus has developed unique and bespoke software solutions. 2019 will see the company move into Data management and Data science as some of the unique core offerings.

What do you love most about your job?
I get to hear the unique issues that different companies face and help solve real issues and problems for a diverse array of business cases.
Also, I manage a team across the world; from Project Managers in Brisbane to UX designers in Portugal to engineers in India so I am always learning.
This means I never have a boring day.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
When you work for yourself, you need to build your own kingdom because no one else will do it for you.
I get up, and there are a purpose and a motivation to create my empire, and I am responsible for my team – that is the best motivation!
How do your co-workers inspire you?
They bring so much knowledge to the table, so there is lots of cross-learning for me. There are always great case studies to learn from.
They often help to simplify the complex and focus on the core problem.
I really admire their commitment to their clients and enthusiasm with the projects they work on.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Our team has a great sense of humour – we love watching funny videos, sharing memes, Instagramming stories of our office life, comparing lunches.
We are also encouraging our team to travel and learn from different cultures, working remotely we all get the chance to travel vicariously through each other in an era of digital nomads.
We love discovering new cafes and restaurants, and trying new bars for Friday night drinks.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge is the ever-changing pace of changing technologies. It is an excellent way of learning but a huge amount of time needs to be invested in staying on the pace, let alone be ahead and keep our position as innovators.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
Always take the lead on product strategy.
Invest in quality control methods to be able to control outcomes and avoid surprises.
Research your client in great depth and detail – their way of thinking is essential so you can help them grow.
Always start lean.
As a product owner, you should know what to carry forward and what to burn down. Market ready solutions may seem an easy alternative, but they won’t solve your specific problem.
Try avoiding a**holes – sometimes being picky about who you choose to work with is the best way to go.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Find a mentor or a coach before you begin your journey – your life is your own, and there is no cookie cutter template – so focus on building a sustainable, flexible and agile business.
