Pop Quiz, Monday with Craig O’Brien

Craig O’Brien

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What is your job role?
Business Coach / Consultant

Tell us about your company?
The company has a simple offering.
I help business owners and leaders create, better business solutions, that lead to better business outcomes and in the process help my clients have a better life.

What do you love most about your job?
Being able to help my clients find the solutions that make a meaningful difference to them.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Knowing that each client will have different needs which creates variety and continual learning opportunities. This also means that I must stay flexible to the short-term needs while keeping an eye on the longer-term strategic objectives we are trying to achieve.

How do your co-workers inspire you?
These days as a soloist, my inspiration comes from my family, friends and my clients.
I watch and am inspired by these individuals as they navigate the challenges that business and life bring to them. Their determination to keep pushing forward, to get up and dust themselves off is amazing, and these are the things that inspire me.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Fun at work is found when you can share a laugh with the clients and their teams. In previous organisations, it was by having team sessions that were a blend of learning/team building and social events.

What are some of the challenges of your job?
Business owners and leaders face increasing levels of overwhelm, stress and business complexities. The ongoing challenge is to help my clients find sustainable ways to create positive change which often involves behavioural shifts. While this is simple to say it is challenging to execute continuously.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?

  1. Never think you know the issues, or the answer before you investigate.
  2. Humans are complex, and even though one’s intentions may be well intended, you must always remember that others may see the world differently.
  3. If possible have some data or fact-based evidence to support your gut feel, before you act on critical topics.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Network, be a continuous learner, know and try to live by your seven core values.
