Pop Quiz, Monday with Samantha Lippiatt, Co-Founder & Managing Director
The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Co-Founder & Managing Director
Tell us about your company?
Health and Fitness Travel is the leading global wellness travel company specialising in creating exceptional bespoke healthy holidays. Beginning in the UK in 2010, we opened our offices in Australia in 2014 and now serve clients across the globe offering more than 1,100 programmes worldwide.
What do you love most about your job?
All the incredibly positive customer feedback, there is nothing more rewarding than a guest saying thank you, your business helped me change my lifestyle or this holiday saved my sanity!
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Creating a business that helps people enjoy their lives and be their best version of themselves. We have a hard-working global team, and we’re forging a new niche (in Australia) which is exciting plus I have set the business up to support my remote lifestyle, so I am always thankful for that.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
Through their personal journeys and willingness to support the goals of the business and to ensure our clients have the best wellness holiday experiences possible.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
As a global team, we celebrate each month with an online kick-off where we share our personal and professional achievements together. When I visit the team, we’ll go out for team building, including wellness activities like dance classes, or having a massage and we also have a monthly team get-together locally to enjoy each others company and celebrate our wins.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
Connecting with all potential wellness travellers — we are changing the way Australians travel, and many are not aware that they have wellness travel experts available on call, or that we can advise and work with their existing agents. We also spend a lot of time focused on reminding our travellers, and in particular women that they can take a dedicated break, and that it is not indulgent to take care of yourself but necessary.
However I am not immune, and I struggle with setting boundaries personally as well when you own your own company it can be hard to separate days from nights. Especially during growth phases, but I have a great team, and I am mindfully working on improving this as the business grows.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
It is better to be surrounded by a great team than to try and do it all yourself. It’s the fastest way to burn out, so get those people on your team and start delegating as quickly as possible. This allows you time to work on your business and not just in it.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?
Prepare yourself for the long haul, the entrepreneurial journey is a wild ride, full of highs and lows but to be successful you are going to need grit and determination, there will be a lot of days in between, and those are the really tough ones. And don’t be afraid to fail, there is a lot of learning in those moments – but you have to get back up and carry on.
Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
