Pop Quiz, Monday with Reem Saied, CMO at Wishfin.com

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

What do you love most about your job?

The freedom to think big.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?

The challenge to succeed in a hyper-competitive and hyper-regulated fin-tech environment.

How do your co-workers inspire you?

Their relentlessness in tackling difficult tasks in short time frames because they want the startup to succeed.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

HQ has regular parties, dinners out. I personally enjoy my work, don’t even consider my work as “a job.”

What are some of the challenges of your job?

The biggest challenge is the regulatory environment in India that prevents fast scale due to complex rules. And the rules keep changing frequently. Example: KYC using aadhaar.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?

Nothing is Impossible. In one of my earlier roles in a startup ad agency, a leading bank had a new e-sourcing program for credit cards which the agency considered “impossible” to execute at a profit. I accepted the project at a huge risk. No media plan had ever been made at such a scale for such a tough ROI target. So I made a plan in a blank sheet of paper from scratch using a heady cocktail mix of intuition, experience, bravado, and hope. As they say, fortune favours the brave, and the campaign was a success from the very first month. And over the next few months became the most successful digital campaign in the history of credit cards.

The lesson: When you face a new challenge in a startup, don’t give up because it never been done before. Attack the problem with the spirit of an adventurer.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?

Be CURIOUS. Keep LEARNING. Work HARD. Success and money will follow automatically.
