Pop Quiz, Monday with Paula Mills, Founder and CEO of Academy of Entrepreneurs

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

Paula Mills

What is your job role?

Founder and CEO of Academy of Entrepreneurs

Tell us about your company?

We are the first accredited incubator of Australia for international students. Our classes are taught by leading entrepreneurs via workshop, mentoring and entrepreneurial challenges. We have a community of entrepreneurs from over 50 countries.

What do you love most about your job?

We empower students to turn their ideas into successful startups — via our educational and mentoring program. Every day I meet passionate young entrepreneurs with incredible business ideas that are re-shaping society and the economy. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them progress every day, create jobs, activate the economy and find/implement solutions to global problems.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?

I have been a social-entrepreneurs for as long as I can remember. Every day is a fantastic day, where I meet with top leaders and entrepreneurs to develop courses, programs, and events that connect and empower our students to succeed faster. I love learning, and I learn so much all day long from leading experts and our passionate community of entrepreneurs. I have the best job in the world.

How do your co-workers inspire you?

Everyone inspires me all day long, from our team to students to our global community of entrepreneurs. I love learning about people’s passions and expertise.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

I always say “every day is my birthday” — and I make sure everyone around me has the same life philosophy. We find any excuse to celebrate every day — our small and big victories. Music, Cakes, and Champagne always add fun to our day/s 🙂

What are some of the challenges of your job?

Focus and saying “no.”
It’s not easy to focus when there are so many incredible opportunities around. It feels like everyone is talking about entrepreneurship and wants to become one.

Governments have it in their agenda, schools too, millennials… even people in the corporate world are talking developing entrepreneurial skills. At Academy of Entrepreneurs we want to develop solutions for everyone, so focusing on a few projects only at a time is challenging.
I don’t like saying “no” (especially) to new projects — so that’s always a challenge.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?

Do what you love, every single day and make sure that you combine your passion with your strengths. We all have different superpowers. Focus on getting better at the things that you are good at (not what others tell you; you should do — you will never lead/become successful if you are busy trying got look like everyone else).

You only live once, so do what you love, get better at what you are good and never ever ever give up!

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?

Listen to your gut feeling. If it feels right, go go go!

Every day you will meet new people and come across new ideas — that will push you in different directions. There are endless possibilities, but only you know what’s best for you and what feels right. So when it feels right, start and don’t stop until you achieve your goal.

Also, have a purpose behind what you do (like the “why” from Simon Sinek). Once your purpose is powerful and clear people will be attracted toward helping you achieve your goals.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
