The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business people. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our interviewee for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

What is your job role?
I’m the founder of Picron. A public accounting firm.
Tell us about your company?
I started my firm 2 years ago. It’s completely online no paper at all! We provide Tax Services and Accounting Services to Individuals and Small Businesses. My goal for the firm is to try to provide personalized advice to my clients but also utilizing the benefits of technology at the same time.
What do you love most about your job?
Helping people, many of my clients tend to come to me looking for help out of a stressful situation (the IRS for example), or need guidance while trying to pursue their passion (entrepreneurs). I am able to help them navigate those obstacles, and it’s quite fulfilling to know you’re creating a positive outcome for people even if its a small part of the overall picture for most people.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
My dream is to build a sustainable business that helps people, and I have the freedom to pursue the dream. Over time, I have started to make progress towards accomplishing this goal, I still have a ways to go, but it’s definitely nice to wake up and know I am making real progress towards it.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
Sole Proprietor, but I do have many Advisers and Associates that have been supportive of my pursuit.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
I try to balance my time in the office with outside activities, especially volunteering.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
The workload is a big one, managing the increasing complexity that comes with handles multiples clients at the same time has been a big challenge as well.
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
When I first started the business, I assumed I knew exactly what services my clients needed. This was a mistake because it tended to make me try to tell clients what to do instead of listening to what they needed. Over time, by listening more to my clients, my service offering had completely changed from when I first started. Now I always try to make sure that even though I may have the expertise, I spend more time listening than talking to clients.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Listen to your clients and potential clients. That’s the best way to align your services with the market. Look for ways to differentiate yourself from your competition. No one becomes an entrepreneur with skills in everything you will need to know, get comfortable with continually having to learn new concepts and new approaches. That’s a natural part of the process.
