Pop Quiz, Monday with Andrew Shelton, Founder & CEO/CMTO at MARTEC360

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business people. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our interviewee for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz, Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

Andrew Shelton

What is your job role?

Founder & CEO/CMTO

Tell us about your company?

MARTEC360 helps enable brands, e-Commerce companies, manufacturers, wholesalers, and distribution companies understand what is truly working (or not) in their organizations. This is done by taking the ever-growing number of data sources necessary for organizations to manage and grow their business, presenting it with actionable insights that help them generate more sales while being more efficient in doing so. Examples of these data sources could be web analytics, ERP data, accounting data, Amazon/marketplace information, google shopping and AdWords data, email marketing, CRM, Facebook/Instagram, and so many others.

What do you love most about your job?

Helping SMB and mid-market companies realize the “aha” moments that allow them to either reallocate marketing budgets that are not working properly or double down on operations and marketing efforts that are working well. It brings a great deal of satisfaction knowing that these insights allow the owners & executives to significantly scale their businesses.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?

I believe it has to do with what I love most about what I do every day. When you love what you do it makes it easy to go to work when it doesn’t feel like work. Complexity is not getting easier, it is only growing. In 2011 there were 150 mar-tech industry companies, that number has increased to over 7000 vendors in 2018 and is only accelerating. That is why our vision of building a unified commerceBI platform so decision makers can understand all of the drivers of their business is so easy to get motivated about.

How do your co-workers inspire you?

Their passion and belief in what we are doing.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

Today, we’re still a small team in our corporate office with other team members located all over the world. The distributed team sometimes creates challenges for maximizing ‘fun’ across the entire organization. That said, we believe strongly in culture, team building and work hard / play hard. In the past, we’ve done escape rooms, get-togethers out of the office, sporting events and other activities. As we grow, we look forward to further embracing the work hard/play hard mentality.

What are some of the challenges of your job?

Technology is changing quickly, and the number of marketing & technology vendors is rapidly increasing every day. That presents a considerable challenge for our clients to understand what is working and for us to build in those actionable insights for decision analysis.

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?

The past several years presented a lifetime of lessons learned. A few of those being: hire slow, fire fast; trust but verify with partners; and build the business go to market plans and sales methodology before starting to role out new product/service lines.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?

Immerse yourself and stay current on what is happening with industry articles, publications, and trade shows. Try and find the niche within mar-tech that you are able to be most passionate about it and go for it.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
