The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business people. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our interviewee for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.
I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz, Monday.
Can you please tell everyone your name?
What is your job role?
Tell us about your company?
Innov8MD is a brand new, first-of-its-kind, inter-institutional conference to spur entrepreneurship among Maryland’s college students. Towson University and The Johns Hopkins University teamed up to spearhead this initiative and gained support from six other leading institutions in Maryland. Our inaugural conference will feature keynote speaker Burck Smith- CEO and Founder of StraighterLine, University Systems of Maryland Vice Chancellor for Economic Development Tom Sadowski, fireside chats led by key stakeholders in the Maryland entrepreneurship ecosystem, and startup mentors for students looking to gain traction. Up to five student-started ventures from each of the eight schools will be showcasing their entrepreneurial endeavors. Purchase your ticket via innov8md.org for the celebration of collegiate entrepreneurship on Friday, 9 November from 5:00–8:00 PM at Spark Baltimore.
What do you love most about your job?
It is wonderful to be able to work with, support, and showcase student-started ventures through the inspirational inter-institutional event around such an important industry in our state.
What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?
Knowing that I build something for a budding industry in our community. I excite, imagine and transform the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Baltimore every day.
How do your co-workers inspire you?
As a junior at Towson University, the greatest asset I have our my mentors. The steering committee for Innov8MD has been terrific resources for me to pursue my goals and aspirations not only for Innov8MD but for the future.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
My number one philosophy is to be silly. When team members are silly, creation begins. I love playing games and improv sessions before some of the meetings. It is a great way to get the ideas flowing and people smiling.
What are some of the challenges of your job?
The biggest challenge is gaining traction for Innov8MD. We have an incredible lineup of speakers, mentors, and resources for entrepreneurs, now it is time to execute and get people in the door!
What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?
I am the Lead Associate for Student Launch Pad at Towson University. We are the student startup hub to ignite entrepreneurial ideas into action. The biggest lesson I learned is to “fail forward.” My stance is “I never lose, I win, or I learn.” From your learning experiences, always make progress. Entrepreneurship is about going in scared.
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in your industry?
Your network is your net worth. Always make strong connections to advance your entrepreneurial endeavors.
