Pop Quiz, Monday with Darren Franks, Founder & CEO at TalentintheCloud

The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business people. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our interviewee for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

I want to introduce you to our guest today who will be taking our Pop Quiz, Monday.

Can you please tell everyone your name?

Darren Franks

What is your job role?

Founder & CEO

Tell us about your company?

TalentintheCloud is a specialist, tech-enabled Recruitment Agency to the FinTech and Payments sector across Africa.

We use the latest AI & Machine Learning Technology to deliver unprecedented levels of speed and accuracy to our customers.

We are Headquartered in London and have representatives in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya.

What do you love most about your job?

Innovating — I’m always looking for new ways to automate, improve and leverage tech in our business.

What motivates you to get up every day and go to work?

Apart from my kids waking me up at stupid o’clock — I’m motivated by transforming what’s seen as an archaic industry into the new age. Seeing the results of the work my team and I have done so far is enough motivation for me!

How do your co-workers inspire you?

I hire strictly on personality and attitude — skills can be taught and experience gained. My team is an eclectic mix of people, and we’re always learning from each other. What inspires me most is there total dedication to the business — everyone in the business feels they have ownership and that positive vibe feeds down to our customers and candidates.

How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

Most of the team is in South Africa (Cape Town) so wine farms, golf courses, and even bobsledding are readily available. That being said, everyone has a family and we respect that family comes first… always.

What are some of the challenges of your job?

Pushing the barriers too far — sometimes we (I) can get carried away with tech and processes so occasionally we need to take a few steps back to move forward. Oh, and the biggest challenge we face is that we’re just too busy 🙂

What are some lessons learned from a past project that you can share with us?

If anyone says ‘that’s how we’ve always done things, so we don’t see the need to change’ run a mile.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your industry?

Find a market that you understand, have a passion for and get out and meet your target audience.

Thank you for taking our pop quiz today. You get an A+ for effort. You can learn more about our interviewee and their business by visiting them on the web:
