The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you cannot learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

2. Tell us about your business and what you do?
I’m Managing Director and Inventor for Crumbs Ventures. We are a manufacturer and distributor of our own multiple brands of products in various markets.
3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?
I can’t help myself it’s in my DNA. I’m a born serial Entrepreneur. I love the “Art of the Big Deal,” economic development, being a significant contributor to the economy while being a positive influence in other people’s lives, THAT example of hope by striving and achieving the successes that are life altering attributed to relentless grinding-hard-work and never wavering. Entrepreneurship is the very pulse of my existence.
4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?
It’s challenging to make all the facets come together. Foremost I have a strong supporting cast. It’s like spokes in a wheel; funding, product development, marketing, legalities, budget, taxes, employees, etc., it’s bringing all these facets together to make the wheel go around, and its ongoing for the shingle to say “Open for Business.” I’m accountable for all of those who rely on our companies for their livelihood directly and indirectly via business relationships.
However, these are the veins (lifelines) of the business that determine success or failure. It’s important to keep momentum so that everyone who relies on our companies/products from partners, employees to consumers know and trust our businesses are viable. But it’s what keeps me motivated and why I wake up ready for another day.
5. What do you love most about your job?
The creativity of inventing products and the day-to-day assimilation of operating a business. It’s exciting to see the process of making deals particularly big deals come together and come to fruition.
6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc.)?
I’m a social person. I like to mix, talk and make everyone comfortable in an environment. However, I don’t play or joke carelessly in our corporate setting. I express consciousness and being aware of other’s feelings and views so that no one is offended or uncomfortable. I’m more likely to take team members to lunch or give out gift cards so that they can have an enjoyable leisure experience at our expense. Team building efforts are designed to listen to the team’s thoughts and ideas and implement them when they are conducive to our mission. It’s essential as a company that “team members” see their ideas not only heard but considered and utilized. I’ll use the wheel scenario again and the importance of all the spokes having a participating role, there’s no “I” in team.
7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?
Hire a Public Relations Firm that talks the talk and AGGRESSIVELY walks the walk. I’ll reiterate what Bill Gates, Founder Microsoft says, “If I were down to my last dollar, I would spend it on Public Relations.”Beginner’s luck is a myth. Research every possible aspect of your business before you launch, including your competition, industry trends, and different marketing platforms. These are factors that are constantly changing and should be assessed often to ensure your business stays current. A late lesson I learned, social media is not only a great place to focus your attention, but it’s also imperative — it’s a cost-friendly option that allows frequent contact with your target market. Your target market actually expects to see you on social media platforms, and failing to be where your customers are is practically saying you don’t exist.
FACT-People like to do business with people they know. Network, network, network it’s never early to build relationships. Attend chamber meetings, join industry associations, and introduce yourself online to peers in your town. The individuals in these groups will share a similar ambition and can help you grow personally and develop your business. Remember that you are gaining more than just exposure to the people you meet; you are also building connections to their networks.
