Pop Quiz, Monday with Tiffany Guarnaccia, CEO at Kite Hill PR
The Pop Quiz, Monday is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise after all since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

Can you please tell everyone your name?
Tell us about your business and what you do?
I’m the CEO of a tech specialist PR agency, Kite Hill PR. I’m also the founder of the first industry week created to inspire, inform and connect those in the media and PR industry, Communications Week.
Both businesses launched five years ago and in that time have seen exponential growth. Before launching Kite Hill PR, I was the head of communications for The Huffington Post, where I launched the new streaming network HuffPost Live. My experience in music tech includes in-house positions at eMusic and LimeWire, as spokesperson during the historic Arista Records v. LimeWire case. I started my career as a publicist for numerous online ad companies including Omnicom agencies.
Our mission is to tell the stories and create new experiences for growing companies in the advertising, media and technology industries.
Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?
It was a triumvirate of influences, including being a female business owner, working under Arianna Huffington and seeing an opportunity in the market place to launch a communications and events agency that now serves what was an unserved business niche.
What are the challenging aspects of running a business?
One of the biggest challenges for any PR agency is attracting and retaining top talent.
You are only as strong as your weakest link, so talent is a challenge for any business owner.
Entrepreneurs today need to think about creating a work environment that not only encourages employees to grow and advance within their business, but also promotes work-life balance.
What do you love most about your job?
I love how I can support each person that I work with and help them embrace their own passions.
How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?
Team outings such as sailing, bowling and enjoying things around NYC are a few ways that we have fun at work. It is so important to develop a strong and vibrant company culture. Culture comes from the top down and the bottom up. Your employees have to shape your culture. We launched a Kite Hill PR Culture Club that hosts activities such as a monthly book club and a health and wellness group to help drive culture from within the company.
What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?
If you are just starting a business, think about your growth plan. Consider a few factors: do you need a partner who can help drive the business forward? How will you accelerate your growth in the future? What’s your exit plan? Think long term but remember that you’ll have to iterate along the way.
